Default Just bought a 2001 RX300

Howdy,
I just bought my first Lexus, a 2001 RX300. I've been scanning this forum the last couple nights and have soaked up lots of good info. I do have a few questions that I'm hoping someone can help me out with.

1 - My navigation is the original version 1 from 2000. I think that I've determined that I can upgrade using a Lexus or Toyota Gen 2 or 3 disc, right?? How much does an upgrade disc cost?

2- My tonnaeu cover in the back is missing. Where can I find one and how much?

3 - How many MPG's will I gain if I do the K&N filter mod?

4 - I can't figure out how to program the homelinke (I don't have an owners manual.) Anyone know how?

5 - Is it normal for the doors to stay unlocked when I put it in drive or is this a mod the dealer can fix for me? Along the same lines is it normal for the stereo to go out as soon as the key is taken out even if the doors remain closed? I'm thinking, or at least hoping these are simple dealer fixes.

Any help is much appreciated!

Matt

1. Don't Know

2. Ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/LEXUS...spagenameZWDVW

3. None, the stock filter flows fine and you risk oiling the MAF sensor.

4. http://www.homelink.com/training/train.taf

5. Dealer can change the settings for the locks. I think the radio will always go off when the key is removed.

Just to perhaps clarify this, the radio/stereo should only go on when the ignition switch is in the ignition-on position or the accessory position (like most cars). Thus, the radio/stereo should be off when the ignition switch is in the off position, even if the key is inserted.

Hello their,I have a 2001 AWD also. You did not mention if yours is AWD or FWD,but I average 19.2 or so in the summer time, and 18-18.5 in the winter time.(on premium unleaded)But lets not go their.I have installed the K&N drop in replacement air filter, and so far am pleased with it.got maybe.5 more mpg.I have more midrange power with it.This is a personal choice,Im sure the stock filter is fine.I have no stocks in K&N,so it does not affect my retirement any by using their product.Make sure you change trans.fluid, and front transfer, rear diff.oil.(if AWD) with synthetic gear oil,as these front transfers are very hard on gear oil.Oh,you may also want to replace the trans filter too.So far,I like mine very much, would buy another.

Thanks carguy for all the links - very helpful.

I have the AWD and I too am getting about 19 mpg. In regards to the stereo, in my Ford, when you turn off the engine my radio still works for up to like 3 minutes as long as I don't open the door. I just figured a Lexus would do this too but I guess not.

Thanks again

Here's one on ebay, starting bid is $99

(And double check with the dealer to make sure this is compatible with your navi)

Almost any Directed aftermarket security system will have customizable door lock preferences. Mine lock when you start the car and unlock when you turn it to "ACC".

Congrats, fine choice perhaps....

On some American cars, they give you up to 3 minutes of power until you open the driver's door to allow for the windows and roof to operate without having to re-start or power on the car again. However, not all American cars will give you the choice to do that just by pressing a button on the factory remote or by holding the key into the lock position. The RX will let you do that after you exit the car. You can open/close all windows by holding the key on the door to either lock or unlock. The fact that it kills all the power to any source after you remove the key, will help in preserving the battery as we have habits to leave things on, like radar detectors, charges and other thing that will continue to draw power while we are not in the car.

I dont think the radio staying on for three min. was a thing back in 2001.I believe that stuff started around 2003 or so.(could be wrong) my wifes 2006 mercedes does that.

Thanks for all the info! That is really cool to know about the key rolling up all the windows etc. I didn't get an owners manual so I'm not too sure of all the features yet. I got one off ebay but it is not here yet.

Another navigation question...do i have to work my way up to the newest version or can I go straight from original version 1 to the newest update?

Thanks

Matt

About navs, you need to understand that there is a difference between software and hardware. The term generation (used loosely) typically means hardware and yr-disc typically means software.

Software updates happen usually every 2 yr. In the last 8yrs or so the hardware has been updated 3 times (I may be wrong on this).

Please check with the dealer to find out what hardware you have and which software to get to match with it. The you can search the net for the best price.

Retrofitting a newest gen hardware may be more difficult.
