Default torn front brake caliper boot

I just finished changing my front brakes on my 2000 RX300 FWD, and noticed that the right caliper boot is torn. It doesn't seem to affect the functionality of brakes. Does this need to be replaced?

If so, what are the steps? Is it straightforward? Simply drain the brake lines, then replace the caliper?

btw, changing the brakes are very simple and straight forward. Even easier than removing the dang oil filter.

Are you talking about the accordion type boot on the slider bolts? For that you need not open the hydraulic.

The safe answer is always replace the boot or entire caliper. If you are sunny CA I would probably drive it for a few more years knowing that at some point it will need replaced. I think there is an overhaul kit for around $20 if you wanted to repair it. You just risk getting dirt in there and scoring the piston ruining the seal. I have driven other cars for years with torn boots. It's one of those things that I fix within a few months on my wife's car or whenever it fails on mine.

I just looked online. Parts America has the boots for $6.59. At that price I would probably just replace the boot. Just search under caliper repair kit.

thanks. i'll probably drive on it for a little while. I'll buy the repair kit, and replace it whenever i get the wheel off. Is it as simple as extending the piston, then removing the rings on the boot?

If its the boot for the sliding pin, then yes, it's easy as pie. Just remove the sliding bolt and you should be able to take out the boots with no problem at all.
