After changing T belt on a transverse mounted engine (not Rx and not even a V6), I swore that I would not undertake this. There are tasks that one enjoys and saves money on top bot then there are some that it is better to pay some one else. My hands are too big to get in small places, so it is almost impractical for me.

If you do undertake the task, Mark the valve train pullies and the main pulley. DO NOT count on stamped markings (just paint over them).

Once you take the belt off .... DO not spin any of the pulley. If they turn a bit remember to turn them back. [Very important ... If you turn them a full circle to match the marks your timing will be off as the engine is 4 stroke].

Lastly, with the belt on and tensioner in place, check your marks for the final time.

Recently I replace my 01 toyota sequoia V8 timming belt and other things (such a pain coz a lot small things need to be removed) and I did 4 cylinder cars before, so I'm confident that I could do this task.

Salim - thanks for heads up. I'm saving your post for reference.

I called Lexus stealer for a quote for the following job:
timming belt, timming tensioner, water pump, anti-freeze

For parts, labor, and tax is $1083.00

Called Toyota, just labor without warranty $150 (timming belt, belt tensioner, water pump). What you guys think? I've use this dealer before.

For parts and labor $800.

That sounds a little on the expensive side. What Toyota dealership did you call? I am in Chicagoland area and was planing on calling a couple for that to be done. Also i think there are 2 belts in the engine...or is there just one. not sure.

There is one timing belt ... hidden from normal view. The 2 belts you mention are exposed and can be seen ... 1 fairly obvious as it runs up driving ac-compressor and alternator ... the other fairly low drives the steering pump.

I relate that to 2hrs of labor, which is possible but less than what I would have estimated (3.5hrs is my guess). Other than tensioner, you may need idlers (they are lubed for life and may need replacement ... if they have blueish hue, you need to replace them).

The thing that bothers me is the "no-warranty". I keep reminding every one that if the T belt is installed incorrectly the consequences are disastrous. I am not trying to put fear in your heart, but please look up GS Forum and read about T belt change at Toyota. Accidents can happen, but that is where the guaranty comes into play.

If you try to go too cheap, you will either gloat or regret. That is the chance you are taking.

Good Luck

Salim.

To be clear, toyota will guarantee their work but not the parts if I don't use their oem overprice parts.
