A few newbie questions about the RX
My wife currently has a 2000 GS300 and she loves it but we have a 6-month old boy and she's looking to sell her car and buy an RX300. A friend has an 03 with 96K miles 1-owner that he's thinking about selling. Do those have HID or navigation or anything standard in 03 or were those all options? Also, is there a window tint that will perfectly match the factory tint, I hate mismatched tint. Anything else I need to look for? With my wife's 18" rims off her GS fit the RX?

Out of Warranty
HIDs, nav, and audio upgrades were all options, but usually bundled into packages. AWD was an option for all years. Most US RX's have leather, moonroof, and what was called the "premium package". It's hard to say what that vehicle might have on it without looking at it. Check out the FAQ thread on this forum and then look at kbb.com for the present value of that car. The '02 (and the short-lived '03, the 330 debuting in May of that year as an '04) were the pinnacle of RX 300 development.
If you liked your GS, the RX will not be a disappointment. It will have a good deal more room, cargo capacity, and utility for a growing family. Good luck!

I will only mention the cons for doing business with friends, both parties feeling that they did not settle for a good price, problems that crop up afterwards etc. Not that these do not happen when you buy from a stranger, but the cost of a deal going sour is more than just the money. There are good things that happen as well, so you have to work that part out.
Not too long ago, I started a thread on "buyers expectation of trouble free milage from RX". There is a wide disparity in what Lexus thinks ... or atleast what they stand behind .. (60Kmiles) and what people expect 200k+. I had my hopes set at 100k and was NOT disappointed.
You are buying (in my view) a vehicle, whose future life, is very much dependent on past maintenance, but at the same time expect things to be worn out. I would suggest that you should be mentally prepared to expect some problems to come up like (starter etc).
As I re-read my post, I must add that the things I list above apply to any used vehicle with milage above 80k.

much ado about nothing
The engine gelling issue is SO over blown, if it was really a problem you would see users all over this Lexus forum moaning about it. The fact is in the years I've been here I've seen 2 cases. If you change your oil on time and use synthetic I think its a non-issue. I blame poor maintence over the coolant passage design.
The AWD tranny issue the verdict I am still watching. I mean a RAV4 AWD system in a mid size SUV like the RX seems like a Rx for rouble?!
I am at 86k and total repairs on my car cost me $3 (the D bulb in the dash) and $65 for new rear hatch shocks (which are working MUCH better than when they were new no creaks etc, highly endorse these aftermarket shocks). Damn car still drives like new.
