I've encountered a paint ding in the rear bumper on the curved section from the flat going to the vertical edge.
It appears to be of a plastic material. Anyone know a remedy to patch this? It's not large enough to take to a shop but it looks ugly as it's about the size of a pencil eraser and it's black in color and looks like a chip is removed.
Yes, pencil eraser size is pretty small. If there is a significant indentation, you can bring up the level with some spot filller (quick-drying, 1-part, meant for small spots). When smooth with some very fine grit sandpaper, use Lexus touchup paint. I'd surround the area with masking tape to protect the surrounding paint. I use a microbrush to transfer the paint from the touchup tube brush to the surface. Use laquer thinner to clean the microbrush. My personal preference is to use a brush instead of spray. Others have a preference for spray paint though. You could use rubbing compound to smooth the surface, but it might not be necessary if you're careful.
If you have 3-stage paint on the bumper (i.e., base color, top translucent coat, and clearcoat) then matching is much more difficult. But, I don't think that is common.
Paint repair is a skill. One can learn but at times, you have to pay some one to do it.
First determine how bad is it and see if you can live with it. [You get more rock pits over time].
Typically the dealership has a skilled touch up guy who comes to the shop once a week. Contact the service writer (or even the receptionist) and see if they will share the name/phone-number. If so, you can bypass the dealership and work with the repair person directly.
