Been doing a lot of searching tonite.. Found out I think how I would reprogram a new key. One question I had - I have a master key with a broken top. Can I buy a new top and just replace the key portion on it? What does the modes mean during the reprogramming section between steps 3 and 4? How do you tell what mode you are entering?

Yes, you can get the key shell on ebay for a few bucks. Just pop the new cover on it and your set.
