Default Rear main seal

I have a 2000 RX with 83K on it. I have been noticing a small oil spot in my garage for the last few weeks. I was getting my oil changed at a Jiffy Lube this weekend and the mechanic identified the leak as the rear main. I did a search on CL and only found 2 posts. Has anyone else had this problem? How much is this going to cost? Thanks in advance for your replies.

Default RX300 Rear Main Leak

My wife's 2000 RX 300, FWD [ 48,000 miles ] was in the dealer's shop about a month ago for replacement of the rear main oil seal. The service director said it doesn't happen often, and usually occurs in the AWD models. Her car was covered under the Certified Warranty, but while looking at the repair order I'd say that the cost to a customer would be in the $500.00 range. [ about 5 hours labor for a FWD model ] Good luck!

Talked to Lexus service this am. They said it is covered under the warranty. Going to have it fixed tomorrow. I will let you know what the charges are to fix this.

Default Main Seal

Was wondering if this repair would be covered by the 70K mile engine warranty?

Rear main seal sounds like powertrain to me!

It would be interesting to see if the 70k warranty would apply.

Dropped it off this morning. Obviously they have not looked at it yet, but they said it was covered under the extended warranty ( I bought it used). I will let you guys know what happens.

On another note; loaner car is a new 330. No long trips in it yet, just a 5 mile trip to the office. Can't say I am terribly impressed....I was expecting more. It is probably not fair to issue an opinion yet with very limited driving, but my first impression is that it is noticeably noisier (engine and road noise) and does not seem like it rides as good. It also seems to shift gears a lot more with noticeable shift jerks. Just does not seem as smooth and quiet as a Lexus should be.

Dealership just called and car is ready. Total cost for parts and labor to replace the rear main were over $900. It was covered by the warranty so all is well for me.

Default Rear Main Seal

Why does it cost twice as much to replace the rear main seal on an RX than it does a Toyota Highlander when the engine and transmission are EXACTLY the same units? [ FWD or AWD ] What a $CREW JOB !

Had my rear main seal replaced in my 99 RX about a 4 months ago. I found out through lexusownersclub.com that it was more common that I had thought...and that the original seal wasn't made so well....but that the new ones are much better. I got lucky and had an extended warranty or it would have run me about $1100.00.
