Default RX300 Oil leak suspects...

My 2000 RX300 has had a leak for a long time. Is there an easy way to verify it is the rear valve cover gasket? Additionally, is it easier to check the seals behind the timing cover? Is it possible to run engine with timing cover off? I did do the TB & Waterpump & seals years ago but would have to take a refresher course. The 50 million things to take off for rear valve cover is kinda intimidating, but I did learn to do TB from You-Tube. Thank you. My RX has about 168k miles on it. Runs well, everything works! I'm on salty Midwest.

Armed with bright light, mirror and patience you can spot the source of the leak. You can use your phone to take pictures too.

Start at the highest point. Some times cleaning also helps.

Expected life from valve cover gasket is 100K miles based on my experience with Lexus vehicles. With 25+ yrs in service the milage may not matter anymore.

Seal leaks would require proper torquing, so get your self a torque wrench [inch-lbs range].

The engine front [passenger wheel side] is supposed to be dry. Timing belt zone is a dry zone. Seepage observation hole is really for coolant to be observed.

Cam seals can leak too ... based on age and use. I recommend cam seals and front main seal to be replaced every other t-belt change.
