Stupid oil change question
Bob,
This is good... I didn't think of trying to fabricate some sort of funnel or diverter to collect the oil. You have a good idea here. Not too much of a problem letting it run down the block though. There is no burn off since the lower block does not get that hot. I just leave cardboard under the engine over night to collect any later drips.
I want to remove the cowling again and look up from the bottom, been a year since I've done it that way.
Blk99 - tnx four input....

I just did the job last night. It would be very difficult to get a funnel in there if you were to develope something like that. I have enough trouble trying to keep the filter from spilling oil as I remove it through the AC hoses. I just cracked the filter and let it drain out for a minute or two. Then removed it completely.
I envision something very flexible like a plastic face mask with a drain (maybe not as there isn't really that much oil) and strict coordination from someone below (ok -wife if I can talk her into the task) and one above removing the filter and draining the oil into the plastic.
funny you mention getting the wife to work on the car. Last weekend I spent an hour getting a thermostat out of a SAAB turbo. I'm 6'4" and my damn hands are too big. She got home and I was eyeing her up. I placed a blanket on top of the valve cover and she kneeled right ontop of the engine. With my guidance she had the entire assembly back together in less than 10 minutes. Unblievable how she could fit her hands right in there with the intake and all the assorted hoses in the way. FUNNY!
FUNNY!
Before I saw your post tonight (seriously) I thought of using a shower hair cap (cheapo version ~$0.25) to wrap around the filter - after breaking the seal with a wrench, I'll wrap the plastic shower cap with the elastic around the filter face and as the filter is quickly unscrewed by hand - and quickly tipped it up - i'm betting I can capture most of the oil because of the elastic band, that would normally release to the chassis and ground area.
