2001 Rx300 engine codes
When it comes to old cars it helps if you have some skills or have a friend who does.
Knock sensor replacement can be expensive because of where they are located. The VVT is easy to get at but still probably $150-$200 to have done.
If doing things yourself and looking to minimize costs, the knock sensor can be hacked and a the VVT screen can be cleaned to see if that fixes the VVT issue. There are threads for both of these.

To get real info, pick up the phone and call local repair shops. Make sure you ask for parts and labor break down. There are two hacks and also a proper fix. Make sure you insist on small harness replacement. Might as well throw in the coolant replacement.
When should you give up on your current RX is an answer that you have to determine. It really depends upon the current condition and your need. Make sure you include the upcoming expense. First gen does not have the latest convenience things built in, but as a basic vehicle it is fairly sound. Unlucky owners have had transmission issues, but other than that, it is basically use/wear items [battery, tires, pads, plugs, lower control arms, oil]. Looks, reliability, comfort are all present. Lexus only guaranteed 60K miles. I would have kept mine had it not been totaled.
