I’ve been calling around to different shops in my area, and all of the “paint and clearcoat” the calipers rather than powdercoat. All are quoting me in the $750 range to complete the job.
Does this seem reasonable? What are others paying?
I'd Cerakote them. Powdercoating is good if the brakes never get very hot, but if you do an HPDE, you'll likely be unhappy with powdercoating. Paint is way better in that regard, but it has to be high temperature paint or paint specifically formulated for brake calipers so it will tolerate heat.
$750 is ridiculous imo...
But I have heard peeps tell me that they got quotes like that.
A friend had an Audi S8 and he was quoted $1k. Stupid.
Shops base the price on the car value..
What lance said about the powder coat is somewhat true.
My calipers, which I powder coated myself, has been through like 20+ track days last 2.5 years, are perfect.
BUT..my rotor hats, which I only powder coated recently, changed color (fading) the 2nd time I had them on track.
The calipers are silver coated. The hats are red.
Guess the silver color doesn’t show the fade.
Lastly, powder coating would mean a complete brake overhaul since the baking would cook the piston seals.
I used all new seals.
Just painting with cerakot or high temp paint is easiest. Mask off and spray what’s visible.
