Default Leather Durability Hits Edmunds LT Test

Several threads have been going around the durability of the seats. I think a recall is coming -

I have a red interior. I am conditioning the leather monthly and hope I dont see these same white scruffs.

This is very frustrating to see...the same has been happening in our IS F's side bolsters. I'm not sure who's running Lexus quality control but things better improve. It seems as if the longevity in the material is at question. It obviously looks good at first but deteriorates as time goes by.

I can see how this would happen on the RCF as the leather seems very soft. I guess its the balance between comfort, feel and durability.

Never had an issue with my ISFs. Had two. Still have one. After 3 years, the side bolster looks new. I guess it depends on how you get in and out too.

This is a good thing. Lexus is quick to remedy issues, especially like this which impacts quality. I think next year's model will have durability improvements to the Nu Luxe.

Over 106k miles on my 2008 IS F... Still looks good as new

It really does depend how you exit and enter as well..

I set memory seat 2 for exiting and memory seat 1 for driving.

Most if not all RC F's are packaged in with Leather..
The red is for sure leather as well..

The NuLuxe for the RC F is only in black and in under packaged / base models.

Howdy, Joe Z

My mistake, this issue is also present on the Nu Luxe as well. I expect that in Nu Luxe, but I'm really surprised that the leather is exhibiting this wear issue also. I wonder if Lexus went with a different vendor for the leather? In any event, they will quickly remedy this with future productions.

Guys, that could easily have been caused by a snag from a belt, jacket pocket zipper, a pouch strap. Speaking from experience scarring my previous RX's side bolster - was my fault.

This issue will only grow as time passes... It seems the bolster material is super thin..

Interesting. I know in lesser selling vehicles, like my father's honda accord, the leather has a coating that's applied to it. It doesn't have that soft luxurious feel; it feels horrendous. But its wearing incredibly well after 5 years to a point where the driver's seat doesn't have anywhere near the expected level of wear for a vehicle with 70K miles.

I wonder if the end result of creating a soft, luxurious feeling leather is what's the problem. Could be that the leather is too thin, or a protective coating wasn't applied at the the expense of making the leather feel awful.

Ouch there is some truth to the thin leather. That's unfortunate and unacceptable, but knowing Lexus, they will take care of it. They replaced my CT's steering wheel for some creases on the leather and my 2IS headrest for some minor crooked stitching.

Default Leather Durability Hits Edmunds LT Test

We have a late 2014 RC F with white leather upholstery which now has done approx 5,000 kms.
At approx 3,000 kms we realised we had a problem when a wear mark appeared on the top of the driver's seat where the seat belt passes over it . If you can imagine sitting in the seat with the seat belt clipped in, it is where the belt passes over the seat top.
We took the car to the Lexus dealer and photos were taken.
Now at 5,000kms, the seat leather is being worn by the belt as well as marking it.
In addition, the seat squab is being stained on the squab by the driver wearing jeans.
The dealer says there is no cure for this stain as white leather absorbs the colour from the jeans!
A claim has been lodged and the dealer has asked for a two week period to see whether Lexus Japan has a solution to the problem of the belt marking

I believe it is a design fault that will cost Lexus dearly. If the seat is replaced the problem will arise every few months with new warranty claims being made. BMW and Mercedes Benz use retractable arms which bring the belt to the driver and front passenger, keeping the belts away from the seats. I usually drive alone so the passenger seat is not a problem at the moment.
