2002 GS 300 Motor questions
Good Morning
I was recently at a shop for some repairs on my 02 GS 300.
When I was about to leave guy asked if I had the original motor or did the motor swap.
I have to admit I have no plans to changes motors at all but what is the fascination or reason some people like these GS 300 motors?
And if you done the swap, do you mine sharing your thoughts as to why you did?
Thanks

Toyota built a few variants of the "2JZ" 3.0 inline 6 cylinder motor through the 90's and early 2000's, a variant of which is in all GS300s. They're also in SC300s. And Supras, turbo and non-turbo. However, the GTE (yours is a GE) version of the 2J is the turbocharged version that is found in the Supra TT and Aristo TT (only found in Japan) originally from Toyota. As you would imagine, there's differences in the engine design when it's built to support a turbocharger vs when not. Since our Lexus GS cars are the same car as the Toyota Aristo TT sold in Japan, it's a perfect candidate for a plug and play solution to install the "2JZGTE" motor in the GS300.
Given that 5 years ago the GTE engines were in high supply and prices were relatively low, these swaps were pretty popular, relatively speaking. Now with Covid, and the scarcity of supply of the GTE engines, the prices are double what they used to be. So many people these days instead build the original GE engine with parts that make it tough enough to handle the higher levels of power that come along with a turbocharged engine.
