Default Supercharged 1UZ custom exhaust setups

Hi all,

I’m looking to change up my stockish exhaust to a custom one. I have S&S headers and Megan Racing test pipes with a Borla rear section exhaust. All other piping, including the Y pipe is the stock 1.97”.

A shop was suggesting a 2.25” full stainless from the cats (test pipes) back, keep my Borla mufflers and delete my stock resonators. Or, add new resonators and delete the mufflers.

My questions are is that size increase a large enough jump for my SCd 1UZ? It’s pushing around 400-450whp, haven’t gotten it dyno tuned yet. And, which route is better, resonator delete or muffler delete. I would like it to sound mor like an AMG and less like a Chevy if possible.

Let me know and please post up your setups and experiences. Thanks!

For a boosted setup, I'd probably go with 2.5" piping, into an X pipe, mandrel bends back to mufflers.

I plan to do 2.25". I have PPE headers, rest of exhaust is stock. When the time comes, i'll cut off the stock cats, weld in Magnaflow high flow cats into 2.25" piping, x pipe, etc.

For forced induction, rule of thumb is, bigger is better. More flow in and more flow out is what you want. I'd 2.5 if you can fit it.

Hey Rock, long time! Your centrifugally supercharged right? I think 2.25 would be just fine. I think the ID of the stock resonators is going to be pretty close to that so if you want to keep it somewhat quiet would be cheap to keep.

Hey what’s up buddy?!

Well, it’s been my 3rd car (weekend car) for the last 6yrs or so. That said, I don’t mind if it’s a bit on the loud end of the spectrum. I just don’t want the annoying highway drone. Some are saying I should go up to 2.5” because I’m FI but no more, and delete the resonators. Also mentioning that a good set of mufflers like the Borlas should eliminate drone after removing the resonators.

Here in NY they are looking to charge me $1K for SS304 mandrel bent pipe with X pipe and resonator delete, and new tips. Seems like a lot but then again if I buy an off the shelf Tanabe for $800 it would prob be $200-300 to install...back up to the $1K range but without an X pipe.

I will do resonator delete but unsure about either 2.25” or 2.5”. Also, not sure if I care if I slightly lose low end torque because of my high stall TC. I already smoke the 275s through 30mph. Thx for your input man...your years of commentary have been invaluable to the entire forum.

Look into Magnaflow mufflers. Much cheaper and outstanding quality. Borla has fallen off and is crap any more. Over priced for some of the worst looking and sounding systems I've seen lately. They survive on their name now. Customers bring their mustangs and challangers and camaos in with Borla systems they got online. I can't believe what cheap junk they've begun producing. Nothing polished, garbage fittings, incorrect hanger placement, droning ricey sounding mufflers. Magnaflow has done nothing but improve over the years and produces the best you can get these days. Everything of theirs you see is high quality.

I've had great luck with Vibrant Ultra Quiet resonators to quiet the drone on my muffler delete exhaust!

Rock, I have a set of GS400 resonators and they are basically borla type mufflers that are actually 2.25 already. They are necked down slightly to mate with the 2" tubing but it is simple enough just to cut off the neck down part which is very short on each end and bam... you have twin high flow borla style 2.25" x 20"(ish) mufflers. I would leave them in the stock location for best drone reduction. Spend your money saved having someone building you either a Y pipe or X pipe in the following style from straight 2.25" pipe. Make the transition roughly 2.75" in cross section.

The "nozzle" section is downstream on exhaust flow, the other half of the X can be open without the center divider.
