So I got a CEL (engine light) again with the takeda after trying to do what seemed to be the proper ECU resetting procedure. I went back to the stock intake with a k&n filter. But this time, despite being really skeptical about doing this, I cut a hole in the stock lower box just like the f-sport intake box for the 2IS (http://img244.imageshack.us/img244/1705/boxnk0.jpg). I used a dremel with some sand paper to smooth out the edges. Also I removed the filter cloth that's attached to the upper box. I'm sure the k&n filter is enough on its own to filter the air. And this cloth seemed to serve a sound insulating purpose since it was layered up.
Glad to confirm, the intake sound is amazing. It's made a huge difference overall and added some growl to it that the takeda/greddy have, just a bit quieter. So this is a great option for anyone looking to get an intake but not wanting to deal with the hassle of engine lights, warranty, and cost.

Now put the smoother pipe back in and you're all set...!!!

Also, just my opinion... I wouldn't have removed the charcoal filter.. What is in the upper air box?

The problem with the joe z pipe is that it'll be even quieter than the stock pipe, and this was done to get as much intake sound as possible out of the car. I'm done worrying about intakes, it's time to worry about the exhaust side of things! As far as the charcoal filter, nothing is in there anymore. It's gone anyway when you install any short ram intake. What does that filter block that the k&n doesn't?

With all of the questions of filters and CAI and charcoal filter removal, I will add one more. How much filtering does JUST the charcoal filter do? Many think the K & N does not filter good enough. Has anyone thought of trying JUST the charcoal filter and no other filter? Who knows, maybe just the charcoal filter is as efficient as the K & N with the charcoal filter removed. Food for thought................................. and you save $60.

I'm still holding out for the F-Sport intake. Sewell's website said it was coming this summer, and now says coming in the fall. I wonder if they are experiencing some kind of delay in getting the CARB certification from the government.

(Honestly, the Sewell website is the only place I can find that even mentions a factory F-sport intake for these cars... but I have to believe that at minimum, they would offer the reusable filter if not a complete intake setup for these cars.)

Larry,

I would leave the Charcoal filter alone... Here is Jeff's technical information...

H Joe Z,

Yes, I have read that. I was just saying with so many people complaining of K&N not filtering efficiently, what is the actual filtering efficiency of JUST the charcoal filter? Maybe JUST the charcoal filter is as efficient as removing the charcoal filter and then using a K&N which cost $60. Just more thoughts.................

Aloha,
Larry

PS I have your intake and exhaust on order, can hardly wait!

I see your questions Larry... I can assure you the charocal filter is not up to the task of filtering out dirt, sand, particles or anything else that you dont want getting into your throttle..

For what its worth, I have never been a fan of oiled filters..

On the IS-F - we only have HALF a charocal filter on the factory lid.. (go figure that one out )

That is a bit steep, it should take them 15 min to do.
Any reason you don't want to install it yourself? It's really easy, just take a look at the DIY (here). If you can work a screwdriver, you should have no problem installing yourself in less than an hour (much less if you know what you're doing, or get a friend to help).

I can see a shop charging $50. That's about 1/2 hour of labour and not much point quoting less. One dropped screw and there goes any profit (and there isn't much profit on $50).

May I ask if you live in Edmonton? I didn't know K&N was locally assembled.
