Alright, so as I understand it, my 1999 GS 300 is running the motor that was sold in the Non-turbo Toyota Supra (2JZGE). I also know the Twin Turbo Supra was running a motor called the 2JZGTE. My question is... What EXACTLY makes the engines different? Is the only difference between the engines the fact that one has turbo chargers and one does not? Are turbo chargers even considered part of the engine? or when they say 2JZGTE.. are they refering ONLY to the motor without the turbo's? I assume there has to be more to it. Does the 2JZGTE have different Heads/head gasket/etc than the 2JZGE?

It seems logical to me that it's probably just the same engine with some stronger internals and lower compression? I should be able to replace the 2JZGE weaker internals with the 2JZGTE's stronger internals right?

The second part of my question is... is it possible to turn a 2JZGE into a 2JZGTE by simply replacing the crankshaft/heads/head gasket/etc.

Lastly, If a 2JZGE can be made as strong/capable as a 2JZGTE with the replacment of heads/pistons/etc .. then has anyone slighltly modified or tweaked their 2JZGE to accept a Turbo charger or Turbo kit originally designed for the 2JZGTE engine.

Basically I would like to throw a toyota supra turbo kit (made for the 2JZGTE engine) on the GS 300 (With some modification of the piping and bends to make it fit the engine bay)... but I am also just simply curious what the precise difference is between the two engines.

 

Too many parts to replace to become a GTE. You're lookin at intake manifold, turbo manifold, some head, alot of the internals, it's much cheaper (and reliable) to just replace the engine with the real GTE.

And there are a few custom applications of turbocharging a 2JZ-GE. Doing so does not require changing internals. You can probably bolt on the stock turbo parts (alot of things to bolt on), but engine management will kill you.

In conclusion: Get a GTE. Alot more cost effective as well as reliable and possible. A kit made for Supra will not work. Even if things all bolt on, Toyota is infamous for that impossible-to-hack engine management.

 

Hahaha... some simple stuff:

1) exhaust manifold bolt pattern different
2) pistons, rings, valve spring, cam, way more robust on GTE
3) my favorite: oil squirters on top of the pistons to supply additional lubrication during combustion process

Which 2JZGTE? MKI or MKII? ...different in terms of ignition system, intake timing, and obvious upgraded internal parts here and there

Hey much appreciative on the info. This may be another stupid question, but, do you know of any place selling new 2JZGTE engines with zero original miles on them? I highly doubt I will buy one and swap it into the GS300 and change the tranny, etc. I was only considering possibly keeping the `99 GS300 and boosting it, but it will probably be traded in for some type of SUV before it drops dramatically in value. But if you know of someplace selling VERY VERY lightly used 2JZGTE engine (Under 10,000 miles, I really don't trust used cars or engines/major components at all), or entirely brand new 2JZGTE engines.. let me know. I don't think a 0-mile 2JZ-GTE exists anywhere. However, a low mileage 2JZ-GTE should be fairly simple to find in Japan. Since Supra TTs just got discontinued a while ago, and Aristo V300s are still in production, you can probably find a salvaged 2JZ-GTE with very low miles. But you'll have to go through alot of trouble.

when it comes to 2JZ-GE/GTE I don't think I know anyone who knows more about swapping/modding them than V300

If you're thinking about boosting it, a very famous and capable shop in SoCal (just think..... turbo specialist tuner.... in SoCal..... often associated with APEXi shouldn't be too hard to guess) is currently building a bolt-on turbo kit for the 2nd gen GS300. I don't have the exact release date but when I know more I'll be sharing with people.

And people can buy the kit through me (hmm I'll need to be a vendor?)

 

Awesome. I appreciate it. Both cars are stock and when the 430 was purchased the plan was to trade the 300 shortly after for a SUV. But the GS is such a cool car it's hard to let go. We'll see what happens, I'll keep my ears open up that kit and look for some others for the second generation US GS300. Thanks again

You can still get GTE short blocks and heads brand new but they will cost a fortune. Get a used 2JZ-GTE and freshen it up. It will be cheaper in the long run.....

 

SP engineering will do the custom supra TT engine swap to your GS300 for a tad over $10k (in parts alone). A dude just got his done for like $17k.

Sell your car, buy a used supra TT for the same money. Case closed.
