Torque converter – first impressions
YEAHHHH! That’s the best $1,379 I’ve spent on my GS. Nothing subtle about the difference, the car is now the semi-monster it ought to be. I got back all of the acceleration I lost due to the intake and 19” wheels – and then some.
I just got the TC installed yesterday (installation was $520) and it rained all day so I couldn’t test drive. Today, it’s still misting and the streets are still wet but I couldn’t wait any longer.
From a dead stop, the improvement is awesome – but it’s also there when a downshift is called for a low speed – like a rolling start and the guy in the next lane decides to floor it.
I’ll have some timed measurements of the improvement as soon as it dries up (maybe tomorrow) and I can make some G-Tech runs. I’ve been keeping records of 0-60 times run with the last several modifications that I’ve added so I’ve got a good baseline for comparison.
Stay tuned.

Overclocker - 2800 seemed to be the right stall speed for a normally aspirated GS. I contacted Precision Industries and asked for their recommendation based on the GS specs and that's what it was - it's also what SRT suggests for the NA GS4.

Sounds good to me, that's what I got too.
But mine has to sit around untill I get the timing right to get it installed. Did you get it installed at the dealer or other? I'm intrested if that's the going rate.

Big "O" - no, I got it installed at Davenport Motors here, a shop specializing in Lexus only - they're a group of guys who used to work for Sewell Lexus here in Dallas. They've got 6-7 experienced Lexus mechanics and a very professional organization. They say that they're rates are about 25% cheaper than Lexus dealers. I didn't even get a quote from the dealers.
Yes I do have to admit I love my TC too. I bet you are gonna see a BIG difference in you 0-60 times, I know I did!!! I even took a new M3 off the line and it made him have to drive like his car was gonna blow up to catch me!!!
Bit - got it through the group buy from Steve at Carson for $859. No, didn't have them install cooler - figure I'll do that myself in the next couple of weeks. I'm really anxious to get definitive times from the G-Tech to see how accurate the butt-o-meter is.
Ok, no rain today – figure to get some runs with G-Tech to see just how much the PI torque converter REALLY improved acceleration. It’s Sunday morning so I figure that folks are either at church, recovering from hangover, or vegging out – I should have the road to myself.
I drive the 20 miles to my “private” track, visions of low to mid 5’s dancing in my head. Approaching the area that I use, I see a car on the side of the road – is that a light rack on top??? And traffic cones on the street??? WTF???
I glide through (a law-abiding citizen, at the speed limit) and there’s a uniformed local standing by the patrol car??? It’s obvious that he didn’t get the memo. I leave the area and drive around looking for another relatively flat, straight, open road that affords some view of any traffic ahead and behind. Closest thing I could find was in an industrial park – not really long enough and road surface still looks moist, but decided to try one run anyway.
I made one half-hearted run with mucho wheel-spin and still pulled a 5.84 - under the circumstances, not bad. Best average of 3 runs before the TC was 6.21 (best single run was 6.16). Those runs were after the 19” wheels and with ¼ tank of gas - today I had a half-tank.
So, although I’ve got to learn how to “feather” the gas to get off better – and until the LSD comes along, I’m loving the improvement in all-around performance with the TC.
That’s my story and I’m sticking to it!

Maybe even worse on my Bridgestone S-03's since they're not high mileage tires anyway.
