Hello all,
for the GS 400 the front muffler pipe ( the portion of the pipe that connects to the CAT Converters, what is that on the other end of that section? if you look under the car it is directly in the middle, looks like another muffler.
You mean part 7 in this pic? It's just a muffler on the 98-00 400's, on the 430's models it may have become a cat when the 300's did..
On the 300's 98-00 that location was a muffler and 01-05 it was a cat.
Either way if your thinking of removing it, it will not cause any issues even if it is a cat because the post cat o2's are only monitoring the front two...
They don't 'resonate' as that would be terrible, they are to eliminate/control resonance in the exhaust system and help cancel out some of the excessive frequencies. They can do wonders for helping to eliminate cabin drone at steady rpm's..

I have wrote a fair amount on X, Y and H pipes. You may want to search as the answers may surprise you. Find another stock one if possible. They work very well.
Removing the center resonator will increase sound but will do very little for power.
Replacing with an aftermarket X, Y or H will likely reduce performance.
Not that stock is the absolute best... just most replacements will not work as well.

Ok thanks again for the information! was thinking of getting rid of #7 just incase I couldn't find a stock replacement, and I also really wanted to know what the hell it did..lol and if it was really needed..I think I'm getting rid of it, if I dont really need it and if it will give me a little more sound, hope its not really loud thou, planning to slap on some headers, I'll try it both ways.
