W-58 tranny??
I'm currently having my is boosted my hp gains should be around 350 hp to 400hp after doing some research Im seeing that my stock 5speed w-55 tranny probley will go... My question is if I go with a w-58 what else does it evolve?? New clutch and will it just drop in and does anyone know about average cost for tranny and anything else I would need to know.. Thank u in advance

I asked the same question myself, but no one has answered it yet either...from what I heard, the w58 trans bolts up to our bell housing just fine...but you will need the mounting plates from it too...what I don't know is what else needs to be changed..maybe driveshaft too?
I seen prices of w58 trans for cheap...Craigs had one an hr north of me for a couple hundred bucks...
But yea...hopefully someone can come by and confirm that this is possible...I heard it from a reliable source...but I would get another opinion

if you have the $$ get an r154
buddy of mine has a supra and his old 1j swap he went to r154 and was a lot nicer trans
his 2j was a factory turbo can so it already had the r154 in it
you can find them from 400-500 usually

If you dont beat on it the W58 will do fine but if you drive hard I would save for the R154. I dont beat on my car but want it to be very reliable so I went for the R154
I got my driveshaft from THmotorsports for like $360 shipped. Its steel made by the driveshaftshop but from them they are pricey

i run a w58
you will need.
w55 bell housing
w55 tail shaft
w55 internal shift rod (the shifter in the IS uses a different type of lever.
there's a few write ups on my.is about this swap.
i personally enjoy the w58 more. its less loose feeling then the w55 and feels alot more solid. i also picked up a few MPH in second and third gears.

i jsut did this swap...
my w55 broke on me 3 mo ago after 6 years of bvoosting ... niot bad when everyone said it would never last... the car is now 10 years old.
i found a trans out of a 95 sc300 for $250 it was clean and internally in great shape ...
We swapped the tail housing, bell housing etc, follwing the instructions on the threads from the My.IS guys who have done it the shop is installing it today into the car.
i already had a Unorthodox racing Alloy flywheel and what i thot was a blown clutch was instead the trans... estimates were 500- 800 to fix the w55... or find a w58 or r154... i went W58 cause i am broke & needed a fast relatively low cost solution...
I had the W55 with boost for 6 years no problems, so I figured the slightly stronger W58 would be fine for me for a few years at least ... till i break it & need to try something else ... or maybe do it again... I dont BEAT on my car THAT hard so if this lasts a few years i may jsut do it again... no need to spend money unnecessarily...
IMHO if you dont beat the hell out of your car ... And i drive HARD mind you but i dont drag race or drop the clutch and hard launch at all ... mainly road racing track days & canyon runs... its amazing what a little mechanical sympathy can do for your parts longevity

W58
car./ trans was in excellent shape when i boosted it... it had been on the road 4 years and had maybe 30k on the trans when i boosted...
Powerwise...i ran from 325 to 380+- rwhp (in recent years) thru that trans for over 6 years...
about 2 years ago i started noticing a rattling noise coming from the trans when it was cold and idling in gear i think .. but it would go away, was incionsistent,...& it never acted up aside from that noise... I would hear that noise about every 10-15 times i started the car.... but never felt any problems with it......Suddenly under hard acceleration & during a fast 2-3 shift it popped out of gear with a Bam & i heard lots of noise ... I was able to pop it back into gear & limp it home.. later when i thot i may have been able to linp it to the shop,.. i tried and it would go into gear...it but the trans was vibrating & Knocking soo badly at 15-20 MPH i had to get it home & call the truck....

Sorry! I totally got lost!!! So to make a swap from auto to manual on is300 the best choose is to go for an r154? Or. W55 that is original is300 manual tranny?
