I bought a 98 CPO GS400 with 55k on the clock. As part of the certification, I was told that the 60k service was done on the car. I took their word for it since all the fluids looked fresh and the tires and brakes were new. I now have 62k on the clock, and in the last few days, I have noticed the car shifting a little weird. Sometimes when it downshifts, it does it with a jerk. Also, sometimes it'll hold onto a gear and not upshift for a while...I mean its not that the rpms go to the redline and the car refuses to shift but it takes longer to shift. I am going to get it checked out at the dealer but I was just wondering if this is a typical problem with 98 GS cars. I rememeber the experience of one fellow CL member who had his tranny replaced at under 70k. Has anybody else had these kind of experiences? Do I need a another tranny fluid change? Since its being only 7k miles, I don't think the fluid needs to be changed so soon even though I do a lot of city driving. Any help or advice would be appreciated.
ya u should change it, I doubt they did this but they might have put some cheaper fluid in it and the tranny is only suppose to use that Toyota fluid, make sure u tell them u want to watch, complain to them and see if they'll do it at there expense
Even Lexus' have problems. Part of your ownership experience [especially buying a CPO] will be how well the dealership takes care of you. If you are having problems bring the car back for a check.
hey what's up i have a 00 gs 3... and i'm having the same problem that ur having... i noticed my jerk when i'm slowing down and it's tring to shift from 2nd to 1st... and when i'm on the freeway i'm goin about 60-65 i'll be reving around 4,000 - 4,500 rpm and i have the get the stick and switch it over to 4 and then bring it back to d and i'll switch over... i had my fluid changed before but didn't do that for a lil bit it's doin it again...
I dont know if this could be it but when this stuff happens u guys aren't going uphill or downhill right? because Lexus does have sensors that will downshift the transmission if it sees more stress is put on it like when going up hill, if not that then don't know what else to tell u guys, goodluck

No, the weird shifting occurred on flat roads. I paid close attention to the transmission shifting over the weekend and the problem didn't recur. I guess I'll have to wait and see if it starts acting up again...no use taking it to the dealer if the problem can't be replicated. Thanks anyway guys
PS. Is it possible that some cheap gas could cause the transmission to shift weird, i.e. the engine bogs for a sec? I always use Shell gas but had to buy some cheap gas when I went to Penn the previous weekend and I didn't refill until yesterday.
