I have the same problem and my local Lexus Dealer says only getting a new tranny would fix the noise. Not what I wanted to hear. I guess I could try new fluids. Where is the best place to get it?

I had the same problem but on my sc400. I took it to a shop to get Check out and come to find out my transmission fluid was dirty and low. Did a flush to it and noise went away. Also shifts smooth.. I guess I got lucky. You should try flushing it

Pull tranny pan and inspect the the fliud for any burnt friction plates or shaved metal. If its present than most likely you have damaged the steels n friction matieral inside the tranny. If it looks good than replace the filter n gasket.Do not flush the transmision if u do not have history that it was flushed regularly in the past years coz it may clog up the valve body in side the tranny that may lead to eratic shifting and no shift. If u have not been changing fluids within 15,000 to 20,000 miles do not flush...just drain n fill.
If the whinining noise persists it may have a torque convertor coming apart.

My '97 has recently developed a whining sound as well. I originally thought it might have been the power steering, but judging from what I've read in this thread, and what I've since experienced, it's probably actually coming from the transmission (though the whining noise it makes when turning the wheel is a tad unsettling in itself). I'm just a couple hundred miles shy of the 150,000 mark - last tranny flush was at 90,325, so I'm guessing a flush probably wouldn't hurt it? Regardless, it needs to be looked at soon before I do any unintentional damage to the car.

Interesting I have the same noise on my 01 gs 300.. Transmission was completely flushed about one month ago and fluids of course still look great.. Not to sure what the problem is.. And to answer previous questions the noise stops around 2500 - 3000 rpm(or 2.5 - 3 rpm which ever is easier for you to read) it stops for me it seems right before I switch to third gear(at least so it seems) it maybe that after that its just harder to hear it.. Not sure.. But if you can try to listen very closely to see if you can hear it when it your in third gear.. I can't hear it on mines but it just maybe other road noises louder than it

If it goes away it's probably your power steering pump. I have the same problem. whine around 1st and 2nd then goes away. You can open your hood and have someone in the car switch gear for you. You won't hear it if it's in "P" or "N" you can only hear the whine when it's in "D" or "R". Try to find where the noise is coming from for sure. The noise location sounds different from inside the cabin and outside.
