Default GS3 SRT Intake Impressions and Mod

Hi everyone,
Picked up a SRT intake about a week ago. Instal was easy, no issues there.
In driving ~1 week I have seen an increase of 4 MPG total (1~2 was with the OBX header). Right now the car is getting 24MPG with a city/highway mix of about 60/40 respectively. On long highway trips (steady 72 MPH) the car gets 28~30MPG.
Total car "performance" mods are:
Thermotec wrapped OBX header, stock midpipe and exhaust
SRT intake and race ECU
B&M Trans cooler
rebuilt front suspension (LCA, LBJ, Caster arms, tie rod ends)
Tein CST coil overs
Tein EDFC
Front RCAs
18" rims (18X9 front with 225/45/18 and 18X10 rear with 285/35/18)
LS400 front brakes
Daizen anti-sway bars

The car rides and performs better than stock in every way, no downside.

The intake brings about a good deal more noise when you get on it. I am in process on building a "box" for the filter to sit in which should bring down the noise a good deal and also make the factory ram air scoop "more" functional. I'll update this thread as I progress on that.

Out of the box there is no way to attach the factory scoop to the SRT heat shield. Using a 4 1/2" hole saw and a 4" silicone coupler this is what I came up with (still need to trim the coupler a bit).

Adding the factory scoop back in has lowered the intake temp 10-20 degrees. Putting the intake temp 1-2 degrees above ambient (when the car is moving).

Yep, already have quite a few of the parts, just waiting for SMOG in December and/or a move out of state. Turbo'd a few cars in the past and am playing with an AEM FIC now which is my choice for N/A-T.

Very similar but I want to utilize the stock air scoop as well.
Did somewhat enclosing the filter bring the noise level down at all?

that enclosed box seems like overkill. where do you get your air from? seems rather restrictive, might help with noise but it seems as if the intake would have to work harder to find air. using the factory scoop as the op did the best idea. it is similar to cai system. op how much is the srt unit?

Please post a video of how it sounds, I have never heard the way it sounds, trying to figure out if the sound is too much for me

There is actually plenty of air from behind the headlight as the box is not completely enclosed. The factory scoop tends to pick up "cooler" air if only by a few degrees than air coming up off of the pavement, from under the car or low in the grill opening. It really doesn't make much difference, roughly 1 hp for every 10 degree temp drop in intake air but the factory scoop is there so why not....

Mo @ SRT is s a good guy. It was $500. Well worth it IMHO because it also includes the fuel computer piggyback--it's not just an intake.

+1 I have been so torn over this intake and if I even want to bother. I mean really what does it improve on a car like ours? Isn't more of a perception of how things are than they really are?

I'll see if I can make some sort of sound clip. As for if it is worth it or not, that is up to you. There are a lot of people that spend $400+ on exhaust that gives less "performance" and may even decrease torque. So all mods are subjective.

As for me, there is a noticeable, increase in acceleration, especially in the mid range. And, as a side benefit, an increase in mileage. For the amount of mileage that I drive, the increase in gas mileage plus never having to buy another air filter means that within a year it will have paid for itself. Long term tests will disprove or verify but right now it is saving me no less than $50/month in gas.
