Cam Pulley Issue
After doing some reading i have noticed several CLers stating not to open up a Cam shaft sprocket pulley (the hex bolts) and pry it open. And if you do it means time for a new one.
Can someone answer me as to why that is?
is it because its hard to put it back together or is there a timing inside of that aswell?
if your wondering...i accidently opened it up and had a hell of a time putting it back together but i got it back together but i am just wondering why.....

you mean those 5 bolts around the VVT-i pulley? they are not suppose to be removed or you need to buy a new VVT-i pully assembly according to the manual. since you've got it back together, is your timing or VVT working properly?
Mine was leaking and I took it apart to seal the leak. Bolted everything back together without any problems so far.
as for timing and vvt right now i am still having a problem as the car doesnt start yet. I think i set the camshaft timing wrong.

There wasn't any spring that I'm aware of. I simply took the 5 bolts off and took the front half of the pulley out with out letting the inner parts fall out.
I didn't noticed any kind of springs when I had it apart. The inner hear slid in and out freely without any kind of resistant.
I took both halves off completely to replace the cam seal, the only thing I didn't do was dismantling everything like you. From what I've been reading, there's only one way to put that VVTi pulley back together so I don't it would cause any problems for you.

lets see if i can explain it a little:
when you take the pulley apart in half there is an internal gear that is bolted down to the cam shaft and then there is a spring from the timing tube pushing out at the outter half of the cam pulley. there is also a secondary gear that goes on top of the mounted gear.
so its two gears, a spring, plus the outter half of the pulley.
its completely different from the ones on the gs3
