I think I remember trying that out and the maf sensor adapter didnt actually fit. I eventually had to hand make my intake to place the maf sensor where I wanted it.

Besides, the whole thing is just a cheap piece of plastic.

no, I used a donor cheapo intake from ebay. You could pick one up for about 30 bucks last time I looked. I cut the small square area of the maf sensor location out and then transplanted that onto some 3 inch aluminum tube.

yes, they all look the same. Even those 300 dollar intakes are nothing but that.

ha yeah that is one thing i can agree with... like i said in my other thread before, it makes no sense to spend 300-400 on an intake that produces maybe 5hp. I just want to see if i can get a slight increase in MPG... i would assume a smooth pipe intake with performance filter will give me at least a couple mpgs.

My only concern with ordering a cheap ebay intake is the MAF sensor will not reach the port on the intake. im sure that the one pictured above is not the same as the one designed for the car... ebay stuff usually pictures different items than what is shipped.

i will be making frequent road trips the next few weeks out of state and need anything i can get to increase MPG... i'll have to give it a shot

oh it'll reach...the maf sensor wiring is very long. the thing to worry about is the stock vacuum hose not being long enough for the new intake. That does appear to be the exact intake you'll get btw.

Manufacturers would love if simple changes that cost them virtually nothing could bump their CAFE numbers.

If a smoother intake tube would provide a measurable MPG improvement it'd come like that from the factory.

(ditto for a filter change, unless you're talking about a filter so "open" it fails to filter properly... though even then I doubt there'd be an MPG improvement since the stock intake already flows more CFM than the engine can use)

or a filter so clogged that a new one restores the lost performance to begin with

Do you mean stick a big cone filter on the end of the stock pipe?

All that'd do is insure you sucked in hot air, which isn't usually a goal of a performance modification.

A "bigger" filter is pointless since the stock one flows more air than the engine can use.

over the weekend i was able to get a better look at the intake on the IS... noticed it has a scoop that runs just behind the hood latch making the OEM system a CAI. only thing i wish it had more air flow from the grill to the intake inlet. it seems like there is only a very small slit that the air squeezes through.

The purpose of the MAF adapter i posted in the first post is to see I could run custom piping to a lower location in the engine compartment.... there really is not enough room to run it anywhere. The OEM setup is really the best location...

I noticed inside the OEM airbox is a secondary filter. I pulled that out (located just above the dropin filter and is attached to the airbox.

Now put it back in.

Dyno testing actually showed a 1 hp loss from removing that thing :P
