Default Drilling Intake Box

Anyone know if you can drill the lower airbox like the F-Sport to work with stock intake tube and stock air filter? Will it work in terms of improved intake noise? and will it effect anything?

So you drilled and are using stock intake tube and stock Air Filter? I'm considering dremelling out a square shape just like the f-sport box

I have the JoeZ tube and Blitz drop-in filter, with a Greddy exhaust. I used a 3" hole saw (Took 30 sec), attached to a portable drill. I saved the cut out round disc in case I need to restore back to OEM sound. Just remember you are defeating the OEM cold air intake system. Again, runs great! Ran a 13.4 @ 104 mph. The intake sounds great with the Greddy!

so is there no point in drilling or cutting a square on the airbox unless i change intake to Joe Z or fsport? I'm just trying to figure out if i can get the intake noise by just making the hole in the airbox and using the existing stock intake without effecting performance or anything

You'll still get more noise drilling the box with the stock intake... though likely a bit less than if you also put the Joe Z pipe on (which is the part that'd actually provide a small performance gain)

this is just me....

i used a dremel to cut out 3 vertical slanted slots... got the deep sound but felt like the car was a lil sluggish than before.

6months later i ordered the lower part of the fsport box with the squared hole... notice improvement of acceleration, sluggishness was gone and a slightly deeper tone.

again this is just me, so take it for whats its worth.

I rememebr reading a thread that drilling into the stock box does lose performance. Something about the design inside, how the air moves, and drilling holes in it messes it up. I'll have to find that thread somewhere.

^because you lose the cold air design. also because there's pressure loss.

i found out this at the last lexusownersclub australia meet

u DONT even have to drill holes in the airbox if u just want the noise of a aftermarket intake
before i put on my Fujita F5, at the meet, we just took off the plastic part that ducts air from the grill to the intake
just take off the front engine bay cover, and pull of the plastic that connects to the airbox
put the engine bay cover back on, and you'll get a LOUD sound
you might have to change ur filter more often, but if u want the sound i would say to do it

i only had that for a week, till i bought a Fujita off somone

The JoeZ doesn't add very much sound, so making a hole gives the sound. As far as losing power, I have a VERY responsive throttle (Better then stock) and a 13.4 is just fine with me. I would not disassemble the cold air plumbing. It may not be sealed but it still directs cold air to be drawn in the filter. I'm completely happy with the sound and performance of this set-up!

u lose like .0001hp...doesnt even matter...i did it to mine but thats cuz i got another air box for 20 bucks from someone who up graded to a f sport so i can always change back...ur only getting 2-3hp from a intake, unless u go with a true cold air, which i might do soon once i find a headlight housing to drill a hole through, should be a fun project

kinda like that but a better job
