Default Air Intakes

Would love some of your thoughts. I recently moved to Colorado Springs, (about 7000 ft) and the car is now less responsive and more sluggish.

When I talked to lexus they said it is normal for this altitiude and there is nothing they can do.

Therefore I am thinking of a air intake upgrade. Can anyone recommend one over another? Will it help get more power in higher altitudes? If not I guess sort of pointless rightnow. There are not alot of reviews on line. Also looking for a dry non-oil model since I have seen bad things in the past when they are over oiled.

thanks

do u want an actual intake? or just air filter? joe-z with f-sport lower box is what i have. of course the lower box is just for noise so you could run joe-z with stock box. im not too familiar with short ram intakes as i do not have one. so someone else will have to chime in for that. good luck choosing!

this snippet should help you with your decision, taken from my thread I created a few months ago:
https://www.clublexus.com/forums/per...y-temps-3.html

Just finished some tests for a k&n style heat shield, so I'll post all the results combined now.

Stock intake: 6 degrees warmer than ambient temps at 60 MPH constant velocity for 10 mins. Hit 97 degrees in simulated traffic stop (idle for 3 minutes) at ambient air temp of 67 degrees F.

Short Ram (no heat shield): 27 degrees warmer than ambient temps at 60 mph constant velocity for 10 mins. Hit 132 degrees in simulated traffic stop (idle for 3 minutes) at ambient air temp of 52 degrees F.

Short Ram (heat shield): 12 degrees warmer than ambient temps at 60 mph constant velocity for 10 mins. Hit 121 degrees in simulated traffic stop (idle for 3 minutes) at ambient air temp of 73 degrees F.

So the data shows that a heat shield will give you SOME benefit but only really while moving. I used a k&n heat shield fitted to the same intake as before. I'll be designing my own now with these dismal numbers.

No intake you buy will add a noticeable amount of power to the car.

The Joe Z will cost the least, and add as much or more than most, but it'll still only be 5 hp at sea level, likely less where you are.

pretty much the only way you can get more oxygen in an oxygen deprived environment is forced induction. or use nitrous when you need to climb hill.

an intake won't be enough to cancel out the altitude.

They're functionally the same part... only real reason to pay more for the F-sport is if you live in CA (or think you will while you have the car)

Hmmm? I live in California and just got my Joe Z intake installed 3 hours ago. I don't see cops giving Lexus owners a hard time with aftermarket in California, more so with rice rockets. I'm curious of this now.

It's Kurtz's way of saying if you live in CA and get pulled over... IFthey ask to see under your hood (for some reason)...

The shiny F-Sport intakes comes with the below CARB Label, which you can buy for $7 at the dealership.

Oh, didn't realize you were shopping JUST the tube part of the F-sport intake...

Yeah, they're functionally identical, so if you don't need the CARB # for CA get the Joe Z...better to give the $ to a forum member than to Lexus Plus, the Joe Z is offered in a couple different finishes, which the F-sport isn't...

Only reason I have the F-sport intake over the Joe Z is around the time I got it two things happened: 1) MS was doing their insane 30% ebay cashback, on top of an F-sport sale at the time, so I got it stupidly cheap and 2) There was a moderate chance I'd be moving out west and wanted to CYA on having a CARB #. Were I doing it today I'd get the Joe Z no question.
