Default w58 swap from MKIII?

Whats up guys, I was walking through my local junk yard yesterday and found a MKIII supra with a 7mge and a w58 tranny.

Can I take all of the manual things out of it and use them for a 5 speed swap? Mind you I'm going to finish my NA-T project soon and will be putting down 400whp. I'm looking to see if it will hold my 400whp, if it will fit, and what I'd need for the swap.

Help me out guys

Why swap a W58?? Although they will hold 400whp max, why not do a R154 instead? Doesn't seem logical to do the W58. Either way, good luck! I'm currently deciding on transmissions too.

I'm going w58 for right now. Biggest reason right now is because I have it available to me. I'll get a better tranny down the road, but I figured I'd do this one as a base and work my way up. I doubt I'll have 400 (high boost) running through it. I'm figuring on running low for a while to get used to the 5 speed and low boost. So, we'll see.
This is where I wish Toyota made GS's in 5 speeds. haha.

Yeah it would make things so much easier. But you know you can get R154 for cheap right? I'm sure for the price that you'll get the W58 you could get a R154 for a little bit more. Trust me, do it right the first time .

I would go for it, as the IS300 5-speed is the W58 tranny, and I have met several boosted member running this tranny. I have no dog in the fight, so I won't say W or R is better, but if you have one available to you at a decent price, why not...? I do remember a few of the guys saying that 350rwhp is pretty much the most if will handle, but roll the dice for yourself, and see if it pays off.

you CANNOT use a w58 from a mk3 supra. You will need one from an sc300 or mk4 supra.

reson being the w58 used in the mk3 was made for the 7m motor, not the 2jz.

R154 could be done, but requires a custom driveshaft.

w58 with an upgraded clutch and flywheel will easily handle 450rwhp.

if your turbo setup is what it was back when I still had my car, you will be fine with a w58 as long as you upgrade the clutch and flywheel. You might as well have the tranny built while it's outta the car for a few hundred more, that way you have room to expand once the boost bug bites.

Yeah it's the same I still have yet to have the time to buy more parts. I'm crushed with school and work. I hope to have it done soon. I'll be on the lookout for a w58 though Can a regular tranny shop build it or does it need to go somewhere special? (Ex. SRT)

post up in the SC forums or even on supraforums, someone's bound to be able to help you out. Or ask JeffTsai where he had his auto done. Boostlogic is gonna be pricey, but anywhere that can cryo-treat gears and upgrade to metallic synchros should be good.
