Exclamation Aftermarket Exhaust and Smog

I searched for this and really didnt find a good answer, mostly stuff about visual inspections and so forth.

I have the HKS exhaust from the group buy about a year ago and am looking to get a smog, will I pass? and If I wont, is there a mechanic anyone knows of with bad eyesight? Maybe someone can pm me?

As long as you have all your cats you will pass the smog test no problem. Technically, if the exhaust is loud past a certain db level, then it is not street legal. I doubt they will give you any trouble for that, and besides, I'm pretty sure the HKS isn't that loud.

OK. I had my GS smogged last year and it passed fine. I have Magnaflows with the rear resonators removed. If I remember correctly, the full HKS cat-back system comes with an aftermarket Y-pipe also, which replaces those 2 rear resonators. This is what you have right? If so, I think the only thing you need to worry about is the smog tech. failing you on the visual. Other than that, if you're car is running well, I don't think it should be a problem passing the emissions part of the test. Oh, and make sure you don't have a CEL either.

thanks for the replies.

the setup didnt come with a y-pipe, but it is simply catback. the visual is obviously much different than the norm as the exhaust pipes are probably 2x the size of the stock.

I have heard people talk about the noise levels, doesnt seem to be an issue even outside the car.

http://www.hksusa.com/images_products/1149.jpg is a link to the exhaust I am using.

Thanks.

Just an fyi, if it doesn't come with a y-pipe then it's not a catback. Catbacks eliminate the resonators after the cats.

anything after the cats does not affect emissions in any way.

That's correct. And, as long as the cats are on, you are good to go.

As long as you still have your cats, you should be fine. If I can pass smog with these cannons, you should be fine.

Oh yeah, the visual inspection is the subjective part. If you know a cool smog tech. that will pass it on visuals, you should go there. The shop I took it to, the smog tech. was 100% legit and wasn't that cool, but I made this point to him. "I know the exhaust is shiny and big, but it's not the looks of the exhaust that pollutes the air." He agreed and smogged the car and it passed fine.

DarkKnight, I meant axleback, sorry about that.

Thanks all, I got the car smogged and it passed with flying colors, the tech said 0 emissions, the guy who smogged it had a 03 gs430 dead stock and was all kinds of questions.

When I originally pulled up to the shop I simply asked if he was going to fail me on visual inspection and he said no, as long as it has all the necessary equipment and passed emissions, it passes. He looked over the car and asked questions before he started.

What kind of questions were they asking?

he looked under the hood and asked if I had anything modified in front of the rear axle. I told him no, axleback only.
