I understand that Level 10, Swift and RMM get their torque converters built to their specs by Precision Industries. The question I have is how different are the specs and do the specs only concern stall speed? What should the proper stall speed be for a GS430? I'm very interested in the benefits of the TC but am concerned with problems such as "check engine" light going on, which may be due to slippage from too high a stall speed or something else.
Anyone have any comments or recommendations on whose TC I should look at?
GS - I think the only ready-made options concern the stall speeds, although Precision can make your TC with any stall speed U'd like just by changing the vanes ( they also offer one free stall speed change within the first year - just ship the TC back to them ). Mo told me that they/Precision offer a stall of 2400 for the supercharged models & 2800 for the non-SC'ed models. Haven't had a "Check Engine" problem that can be attributed to the TC in 2 years of having the convertor so I endorse it completely!!
Most likely you will have the engine check light problem if you have 2001+ GS430. Both Wei and I had the engine check light on after 10000 miles on our 2001 GS430. Later Wei bought a 2002 GS430 and this time, the engine check light came up after only 2500 miles.
Ryan - The stock convertor stalls at roughly 1600 & flash-stalls to 1800 rpms. As I mentioned in my earlier post, SRT/RMM/Precision offers two ready-built models - 2400 rpms is recommended for the engines with forced induction & 2800 rpms for those naturally aspirated motors.
Based on what Racingaristo and Wei experienced, the check engine light seems to occur more frequently on the 01-current model. I assume they have 2800 stall speed version. Anyone else with 01-02 models also having the same problem with the aftermarket TC? Also, has anyone tried lowering the stall to 2400?
Just purchased a TC from Precision and he recommended with my modification to the car a 3,200 stall.. I have not installed it as of yet, but I will post when its in the car. Two more weeks or so!! They will also allow free stall changes for the first two years if bought from them directly. My car is a 98 and I hope the engine lite doesn't come on.
