Question installing 2jz camgear

http://lexus.spx.com/detail.aspx?id=98&g=8

according to the 2jz timing belt manual, when installing the vvt-i pulley it requires using a wrench to hold the camshaft in place. But on the exhaust side, it requires 09960-10010 (drive shaft holding tool) instead of holding the camshaft with a wrench.

My question is, can i just hold the exhaust camshaft with a wrench instead of using this SST?

bump.

is there a substitute for SST 09960-10010, 09213-54015, and 09330-00021?

You should be fine using a normal wrench. It looks to me like they expect you to leave on the valve cover on the exhaust side when you are replacing the timing belt. You have to remove the valve cover on the intake side due to the VVT-i BS being in the way.
Seems to me some smart guy figured out it was cheaper to make a specific tool that would cost a shop once, than lose the 1/2 man hour of labor to remove and reinstall a valve cover.

That is unless I completely missed something.

my dad's mech also said just remove the 2nd valve cover and take a wrench to it. the 09960-10010 costs at least 400 bux and he would not let me borrow it.
