Default fuel additives

I was wondering if anybody has experience with additives for fuel?(octane booster,...)If we buy a special exhaust to gain a few hp why not try to ad something in the fuel for extra power? (i drive now with 95octane)

Octane boosters or racing fuel require adjustments to be made to timing to get the real benefit of such additives. Adding them alone does hardly anything, though that hasn't stopped many people at my 1/4 mile track from trying this to no avail. You are right that an exhaust can add hp, but better way to improve after an exhaust would be adding something in the way of the air going into the engine, which could start from a better flowing air filter, ram air system (like I have) or all the way up to forced induction.

I'd continue working on your exhaust, that is where your gains are going to be made. Intakes are a start, but they need a lot of good design work, but they won't approach anything close to what a good exhaust system will do.

If your engine isn't knocking or pinging now then increasing the octane won't do anything but cost you money.

Keep in mind too most octane boosters are using "points" to mean 0.1

So something that says it boost octane 8 points means you go from 93 to 93.8

Some gas stations will sell "race fuel" that's actually 100 octane or better, but again it's totally useless unless the car is somehow tuned to take advantage of it.

The only additive I ever use is Chevron Techron every ~10K miles for preventive maintenance.

The Chevron Techron is a separate additive in a bottle? Or are you talking about the regular gas used at the Chevron gas station? I rarely use additives so I don't know. If it's gas, I use it on every fillup. Cars love Chevron with Techron.

Chevron sells a concentrated version of Techron also, so I make sure that I use Chevron's Super Unleaded with Techron whenever I dose my tank with a bottle of Techron.

Hey Gernby, you ever do a Blackstone oil analysis? This thread just reminded me of something. My last Blackstone Report showed perfect results for everything except for higher than normal levels of Lead, which can only be explained by additives. The only two additives I've ever used in my car are the Chevron Techron about every 5000mi and the occasional gallon or two of VP "unleaded" 100. At the time I spoke with Blackstone I had totally forgot about the Techron additive that I used on occasion and I now wonder if this could have contributed to the higher lead content.

I wouldn't touch that stuff with a ten foot pole. Bardahl's top oil gets sold all over the place down here, including Pemex stations (nationalized gas), and everyone who has tried it told me it hasn't done a thing.

I've done Blackstone UOA's every time I've changed my oil, but I'm not certain if I've ever used Techron in this car before this batch of oil. I'll let you know if it comes up weird.

Techron won't affect your UOA. Leaded fuel will for sure.

I saw the episode too. With the services of Oxford Brooks University, they hooked up a Rover K Series engine to a series of computers which precisely control the throttle. They did test after test to eliminate any variables on their test engine. Personally I wasn't surprise of the -2% power reduction for all four octane boosters. I like that they included the NOS brand "with Nitro Methane" marketing crap. I hate seeing people spending their money for magic in a can. The more they do test like these the more people will get educated.
