Unhappy LS400 engine compatible with GS400???

I am new to this forum...did some searching...and can't readily find the answer. So, I apologize now if I missed this answer somewhere else.

QUESTION: Can I install an engine from an LS400 into a GS400? If so, what components need to be kept from the GS? Is this advisable?

Yep, 2 nights ago, my 1999 GS400 with 125k miles died catastrophically...don't know why. If my photo attachment works, you will note the connecting rod that is through the engine block above the engine mount on the driver's side. Quite dramatic? Oil is fine...same thing I've always done. I drive the car very hard...and this blew about 6k RPMs in 2nd gear....hmm...no clue.

But, I plan to keep this car....still everything I would ever want in a car (based on my budget!)...so, no problem...except...

Having trouble finding an engine to replace it with. I do have a bid, but the engine is supposedly coming from a 1999 LS400....I think those long blocks are the same...but know nothing else. Can an LS engine simply be dropped into my GS...or are there seveal components from the GS that need to be removed and put on the LS engine?!?!

Any help would be great.....thanks.

The engines are the same, but some items such as the headers and intake are going to be different. For the most exact match you'll want one from 1998 - 2000, the 1UZ-FE VVT-I v8 motor. You could also get one from the same year SC400s

DaveGS4,

So, the long blocks of the 1999 LS400 and GS400 would interchange, but anyone planning on using an LS400 engine in a GS400 needs to plan to refit the GS intake assembly (manifold, fuel, computer, etc) onto the block/heads of the LS engine?--as well as the other items you mentioned.

...i.e., certainly not just a drop-in?

To the best of my knowledge the intake manifolds are the same. The air ducting from the air cleaner to the throttle body is different but that is not a problem. The exhaust manifolds look very similar but are not. On earlier cars the LS and SC used different oil pans but I am not certain about the years you need 1998-2000. In fact, you can probably also use a 2001+ 430 engine.

The VAST majority of used engines available are from early model LS and SC400s from years 1990-1997... those are not advisable as replacement for MANY reasons.

As for the reason for the failure... do you know yet? Was the timing belt replaced on this motor around 90k miles? Had a friend years ago loose his Infiniti Q45 engine when his tensioners failed and timing chain jumped. Pistons hit valves, rod(s) broke and punched through the block. His happened during cruise at 60mph.

I am going to use a long block from a 1998/1999 LS400. All ancillary components will be reused from my GS.

As for reason of failure, I do not know yet. There might be more damage...haven't opened her up yet. Yes, timing belt was replaced around 91k miles. Oil usually changed about 3500-4500 miles. Last oil change was 1015 miles ago.
