Default ATF Replacement - How much??

Guys,

Going back to my stock TC. I am guessing I will lose all my ATF when it is pulled??? Is this right?? How many quarts do I need to refill?? Is it 16?? This sucks!!

You shouldn't need anywhere near 15-16 quarts of Atf to do a Tc install. Try *maybe* 5 quarts. You need enough to fill the Tc and then top off the tranny.

I just changed out my ATF and it took just over 10 quarts to refill. This was done with the machine that 'sucks' the fluid out.

macd, I'm not sure what your point of reference is. Sure, he needs to fill the TC and enough after that for the pan and internal passages, but it's more than 5 qts.

Like TeeLex, when I did my TC replacement it was around 12 qts.

Your right, 5 quarts was a little on the low side but I've done numerous Tc's and have never used that much fluid. I mean 10 quarts max and I have never used that much. I would say 9 quarts max should be plenty, 3-4 quarts to fill the new Tc, another 3 or so to top the tranny off and then maybe another 2 quarts once the fluid has cycled. Idk, but thats about the average for all the tc's I've done.

total capacity is like 8 litres... drain and fill is 2... with the torque converter, you need no more than 7...

don't forget to run toyota/lexus T-IV fluid only..
