Default Long Term Reliability with TC & Cooler

I am considering getting a TC for my GS400. I know that you need to have a tranny cooler installed at the same time. Does anyone have any ideas or experience with how much the average tranny life is reduced with a higher stall torque converter (even with tranny cooler)? If it is about the samle life then that is okay.. if it is 50% less life then the TC is out.

Those guys/gals with significant miles with the TC and tranny cooler please chime in . Also if you can give your current odometer reading that would help..

Thanks alot!!

I've had mine on since early 2000, maybe 40,000 miles then. Ran it for at least the first year or two without a tranny cooler with no issues. Got a tranny cooler before I took it to the track at a CL event since I knew I'd had the potential to do repeated brake torque launches (which really heat up the transmission).

Now at about 72,000 with supercharger on for last maybe 3K miles. Tranny has had no issues, but I had valve body upgrade done when supercharger was installed.

So... 30,000+ miles on mine with no issues. I wouldn't hesitate to do it again.

i know someone who has the tc in their car without tranny cooler since 2001 with over 50k miles and still no problem. granted i wouldn't suggest that of course. oh and he races pretty often.

i think it's ok, unless you abuse your car like crazy

Think I have about 2 years and 20K plus on my TC and tranny cooler. No problems. My GS is sitting somewhere around 88K.

I drive like that,....seriously,......but I've only had my TC for about 5000-8000 miles now.

the only way the TC will "wear out" your tranny quicker is if you thusly overheat the fluid, which is obviously waaayyy more probable without a cooler.

If you get a good cooler, mount it in front of your radiator, and still stick to a regular fluid maintenance, then you will have absolutely nothing to worry about my man.

Do it and let the fun begin!!!!!

What is the best cooler and like I asked before, does the TC only help at launch or does it help to pass someone from 60 on up? or what helps that? does the 3.46 differential help that or what?

bm racing 70264, i think that's what i have

umm.... tc helps the car to down shift a lot faster and more precise on my gs4, so i think it helps. but i think at freeway speed, maybe supra tt rear end helps more

dsmart... please use search for these answers, they have both been asked discussed times before I don't have time at the moment to search up a bunch of links, just be smart with your keywords and you'll find loads of info on both coolers and the torque converter.

Thanks guys..

Your responses have helped put my fear to rest regarding the TC, I will look get this done within the next 2 months. I believe Dragon and Precision industries make a good TC, any suggestions on who has the best price?

Thanks again!!
