The whining you incured on this forum doesn't do anybody, including yourself or any BMW owners, any good. Constructive criticism is welcome. As long as it is exactly that. I've been a BMW fan long before I even had a chance to drive a Lexus/Toyota. I will go out of my way to show my respect for them. But if you feel your being put in a position to whine/tout BMWs. Then go do it on their forum. Not here.
What on earth R U talking about. The guy stated the M3 and M5 are superior to Lexus in performance. Without mods, this is a FACT. And without a manual transmission, will be a step behind no matter the mods we add.

Whining? What whining? Not by Morris. I did see you whine
Sounds like somebody should be in the BMW forum instead.
That was really useful here

Well, I'm still pretty new to this forum but I have been working on the Ford 4.6 32 valve platform for the last 5 years working on Lincoln MarkVIIIs,and I'll try to help here as much as possible.

The Ford engine and our Toyota engine are fairly similar in design, but have a few key differences.Mainly the valve actuation and cam gear.

While the early stages of development in the Ford world we thought there was not much power to be had in high lift cams, so we added mostly duration and kept lift close to stock. Now further testing has shown good power gains with added lift and duration.Especially with N/A cars.Boosted cars still dont make large gains from big cams.So you FI guys dont sweat the cams that much.

Now to the guy looking for advice in his buildup, I would look to JE or CP for your piston needs. They are always good about getting custom orders out in a timely fashion. And JE MIGHT have specs already.
But if your looking to build a HIGH HP big boost car I would look into having custom ones made where the ring lands are moved down as far as the piston pin will allow. This makes for a much more detonation proof piston.Your definately going to need a GOOD machine shop involved in your project.Designing custom pistons isnt childs play. And make sure the shop uses a torque plate when they hone the block.YES it will cost you more cause they will have to buy one since this isnt a chevy 350 or a 5.0 ford.LOL.
The rods I would look to Manly or Eagle, they should be able to make a nice H beam that will handle 600-800 HP no problem. If you want better then that look into a Manly forged I beam, but expect to pay at LEAST 1200 bucks for those. And I say at LEAST because thats how much one cost that they already have in stock, not a custom order. So maybe more.
I would not worry about the crank. It seems to be a very strong piece. If you are worried about it you could have some custom work done to it like knife edging it, shot peening it, cryogenic freezing of it etc etc.

For bearrings I would go with stock pieces. These import engines are kept to very exacting tolerences and your machine shop will be able to take some measurements and pick what size factory bearring each throw of the crank needs.

No matter what you should get the entire assembly balanced. And when I say ENTIRE, I mean it.Give the machine shop all the pistons, rings, rods, bearrings, and especially the flexplate.

Now on to the heads. I believe there is definatley power to be made with the heads. And I'll prove it shortly.

The most important thing is that you communicate with your head porter and he knows your plans and goals with the car.Whether its going to be boosted, nitrous, or N/A, and if its a street car, a race car, or a street strip car.
Things to consider when looking for a head porter are, does he have a flow bench to check his work and get parity between ports, is the same place going to be doing the valve job etc etc.
Speaking of valve jobs there is definately flow to be found with a GOOD valve job done by a good cutting tool .And make sure they use a vaccuum gauge to check the parity between valves.

Oh and be prepared to pay extra for the flow work because they probably havent done one of these heads before so they will have to build a plate to flow the heads.

I hope this leads you in the right direction. If you have any more questions feel free to ask.I dont work on cars for a living any more but I still love doing it and helping whenever I can.

Hi LMSguy,
Thanks for the imput and advice. We are on the same page. Without getting into this design, I had a gut feeling that there was a good bit to be gained. Found some info overseas about these heads, and there is a lot to be gained from slightly cutting on them. Yes, everything, and I do mean everything will be balanced, only way to go. Do not believe in half stepping it. These engines are used worldwide just in different model names. Build up on them are producing some excellent results in other countries.

Yes, head guy does have a flow bench, but has not done these heads before, he is really looking forward to it.

Everything is in Fla, I have called and called, but who knows what has happened to many business down there. Chances are there is going to be some delays that is for sure. After this last hit, he may not have a flow bench now. No problems, we just start again.

Not looking to make full blown, just very street/strip for weekend fun, so that fellow owners can use on their cars.

Thanks for sharing photo, that is one fine, beautiful engine.

Best,
Tim
