trd thermostat question
i just got the trd thermostat for the gs400.... was all excited and started to pull out the hose etc... and all the coolant flying...
but once i took out the stock thermostat, i noticed that its diameter quite a bit bigger than the trd one i got. the trd one doesn't really fit in the original position of the oem one....
do i have a wrong part? or is it supposed to be? if so, how the heck am i going to fit the smaller thermostat in? btw i got the thermostat from steve ganz of course

and wasted me couple of hours and tons of coolant running around @_@
imo it sounds like you have the wrong part , the thermostat needs to fit like oem or else how does it stop the coolant from flowing constantly..
i am actually going with the toms one soon , the toms version is supposed to lower engine operating temps by 10-20 deg in conjuction with either the toms or trd rad cap which i have already
Wait Rominl is asking a question? What a noob LOL j/k. I was going to get the TRD thermosat too since I have the radiator cap and oil cap. Let me know if it also keeps the engine cooler. Since I have a 300 it should fit fine right? Same as a supra.
hey at least i did a search
yeah i am talking to steve to find out why it's smaller. this is so confusing @_@
and i was like dead filling coolant and stuff last night... COLD....
I didn't get a chance to compare the one I got for my GS (TRD vs OEM), but I was concerned I got the right part. It wasn't well labeled for GS v8, engine code or even model. However I did ended up going to the TRD website where they list all their parts and figured out the same TRD thermostat was used for the engine in the GX470, etc v8 engine and I found labeling for '470' on the box.
A little backward I know, but might help. I don't have that TRD site bookmarked on my laptop here, but its the same one I've used to look up the TRD LSD model number before.

Of course, I am running a "stock" engine, and as such, my comments may not pertain to those of us that have superchargers and turbos, ect. These units will run hotter anyway. But a stock unit with a real cold thermostat may also burn a bit more fuel due the computer seeing a colder engine and adjusting the fuel flow upwards.
I use a plug in AUTOXRAY scanner, and with the stock thermostat and the engine at idle fully warmed up, the temp fluctuates between 190 to 208 degrees F. The fan comes on at 208F, and goes off at 188 degrees. If I have the AC on (many people run their GS's this way..I do most times), the high speed fans never come on, just the slow speeed fans that occur with the AC.
I just bought my 99 GS4 from Scottsdale Arizona about a month ago. When I left Scottsdale headed for California, it was 112F outside. I drove from Scottsdale through Blythe, Calif where it was 115F. I ran A/C (naturally) while driving 75-80 mph, and the temp guage never read any hotter than it always reads. My GS burns enough gas as it is without making it burn more.
Bottom line is: to me, the system is very efficient as it is, and making it too cool may not be desirable in all cases. I put a "160F" thermostat in an old Mustang I used to own, and I found that I burned more fuel, and the soot in the tailpipe increased over normal. Once I changed back to stock, things went back to normal. Once again, I did not have the car supercharger or turbocharger, so in stock configuration, I found I did not need the colder thermostat.

where can i get a toms thermo from
well i don't know if it will really work fine, but i figured it will never hurt to have them, so...
i have the same problem rominl had. i bought a trd thermostat online and it didn't fit. i looked at the application list posted above but couldn't find myself there (1uz-fe gs400 does not seem to be listed under the aristo application, unless i'm looking at it wrong).
the packaging my trd thermo says on the side:
0002-17620-440 thermostat, 160deg, 4.7s/c
16340-sp030
90916-03100
help?
maybe i'm doing something wrong...
