Default First mods

Hello, i just recently found this board after my dad handed over the keys of his 98 GS400 (yay!). I am 17 and this will be my second car. Know after reading alot i would like to put exhaust and prolly intake on my vehicle just for mainly to learn about the engine/how things are put on it etc. Im in autoshop class and stuff and i really like to see/learn how this is done. What would you guys suggest for a full exhaust system and intake? It needs to beable to still pass emission tests and cant be to hefty on price. And does a ECU upgrade from like swiftwolf effect emissions since it is changing the air/fuel ratio? just curious. BTW here is my ride.

thanks again

Congrats. You've got a good car to start with. You'll need an intake like this:

And an exhaust like this:

I can tell you're from Houston area. It's all good to pass the state inspection.

Gman, congrats on your new ride! And welcome to the best Lexus site on the PLANET.

Use the search function, just type in intake and exhaust, and LOTs info will pop up

borla exhaust for 500 and swift racing technology ECU and intake for like 600. After doing my research thats what i came up with, will there be any signifigant power gains? this will prolly be the extent of my mods and i dont want to much power cause of insurance warranty and my saftey hehe. Is a ECU really required for a intake? cause i rather spend like 300 on a K&N air intake than 700-800 for ecu and intake from swift

Swift is one of the only one to show sizable hp gains on a dyno, (15-30) whearas others are like 5-8hp, etc

you have to do the ECU with the swift, thats why its so expensive! RMM exhaust is very quiet I have heard, go to the classifieds there someone selling one for about 300 bucks or so

k cool well, this summer i will have a internship job at washington mutual and hopefully make some cash. Which mod should come first the borla (i listened to the sound on this beast and all i have to say is wow...) or the Swifts ECU upgrade/intake. Will the ECU cancel my warranty or anything of that sort?

also what kind of 0-60 and 1/4mile times do GS400's pull down? im guessing mid to low 14's on the 1/4 mile and like 5.5-5.8 for -60?

Gman,

Welcome to the forum. I'd recommend before you start to modify, you keep a close watch on the 'regional' forum for meets in the southwest forum and check out some of the hooked-up GS's in your area to get a better idea in person of what the mods do, experience the suspension transformation, hear the various exhausts, etc.

Your times are right on!! about 5.6 or .7 and 14.4 or something like that, or better yet a whole helluva lot faster than my 96 GS3 was!!

I think exhaust should come later. It posts very minimal gain and does nothing but irate the neighbor. Lexciting's twin turbo V8 up until recently was still using stock exhaust system and that car was pushing well over 400hp!!!!

So yeah, get an intake+chip, see if you like it, then add an exhaust.

Congrats on the "new" car. I like the color -- it's my favorite. The intake and exhaust will help with power but are primarily for sound and looks. [I have the K&N intake and Tanabe HM exhaust.] Rims are nice but expensive and you will want to lower the car otherwise it will look funny. Once you have the rims you will notice that the brakes don't look good and you may feel the itch to upgrade. And with all this fun you are having you may find that you want to go faster and handle better. Add in a high stall torque converter, a limited slip differential, anti-sway bars and a plethora of bracing. And you may then find that you want to look good and sound great. Add in a body kit and various cosmetic mods in addition to a full audio upgrade. And then you can explain to your dad how you spent your college money.
