Can u adjust cam timing w belt in place? 1UZ
My cams and crank are out of synch non VVTI 92 1UZ. I mistakenly turned my engine in reverse when doing my valve clearances Nd the timing belt slipped leaving my cams out of synch with each other as well as being out of synch with the crank.
I’d like to adjust without pulling the water pump and all the other front engine stuff. I have pulled the tensioner by the belt is still very tight.
is there a way to adjust thing back to synch.
I’d prefer to hear from folks with experience on this rather than gather opinions.

looks like I'll have to pull one of the cam timing pullies. The service manual calls for a SST (special service tool) to hold the pulley for tightening/loosening.
what's the backyard method to hold the pulley?
The SST is a larger version of the tool you use to tighten the clamping disk on a grinder.

to answer my own question. The belt has to come off to adjust. Not as big a deal as I envisioned. removing, compressing and reinstalling the tensioner gets old. Took me 6+ tries to get it right.
there''s a video on youtube by cartuneNZ that does a belt replacement. Great video and makes it look easy. Also a lot of tips on ancillary work that should be performed while doing this job
