Unhappy 1994 SC400 HVAC does not respond to temp setting

I could not find anything quite like this in several threads I searched. My 94 has 55K miles and is in great shape. However, one of the LCD screen backlights jus went out. This may be coincidental but HVAC operation also started acting strangely. The AC compressor cycles more frequently. Regardless of external temp, when the compressor on, the fan speed goes to one bar. When it cycles off, there are no bars. I can change the fan speed in manual mode, and the bars respond to those settings, but the compressor does not.

It does not appear to respond to changes in the temperature settings. The LDC screen will change, but system operation does not. When set to MAX HOT, it still blows cold when the AC compressor is on. When it is off, the air is at ambient temp. Same is true for MAX COLD. Fan speed on either setting is one bar (compressor on) or no bars (compressor off).

Based on previous threads, the cig lighter works, and the connectors I can get to without dash disassembly are tight and connectors are corrosion free. There are no unusual noises. The LCD screen read operates normally and responds to changes when I press the buttons or change temp. I’ma nerd, so disconnected the battery in case rebooting the system would help, but it did not. I did change the radio 12 months ago (personally), but everything has been operating normally since.

Any ideas? I hate to go to a dealer as my experience has been that the technicians really don’t do well on the older cars. I’m in Atlanta, so would love to hears recs of local competent techs.

Thanks!

Have you tried having the system checked for freon? Might be low on freon which is causing the compressor to cycle on and off. That would be the easiest place to start before you start replacing other parts.

I'd say your hvac unit is dying... send it to tanin to be rebuilt or buy another one for the same year

Never heard of a climate control causing those issues.
