SC400 V8 Timing belt replaced won't idle but runs
Hi all,
Before touching the car it was working perfect.
This one has me beat.
Changed the timing belt not because it broke but because the cam and crank seals started to leak... one of them spraying oil over the underside of the bonnet (guessing it was the crank one) All the seals were really hard - it had done at least 150,000 kilometres ~90,000 miles.
TDC - is the rotor button at the correct angle?Have read many forums and even followed various threads but haven't found anyone with this problem. Similar but not the same.
Finished the installation of the timing belt - water pump etc.
On first attempt to start it just cranked but occasionally would try to run. This problem turned out to be the cam angle sensor was disconnected on the right bank. The plugs on this car are really brittle so much so one of them I have had to Silastic it together (Dow Corning product)
Second attempt same problem. My son was trying to start the car. The next day I had a go and perhaps because I am an old man I gave the accelerator pedal a pump/push and low and behold the car would start and rev like normal. As soon as I take my foot off the accelerator it would instantly stop.
It will only run if I accelerate.
Checked the idle valve at the font of the engine and the plug is in tight.
Checked the cam angle sensors and they seem to be connected correctly.
Had a play with the accelerator cable in an attempt to make it keep the pedal down a little so I could use the car but I don't have that much slack in the cable.
Tried adjusting the idle valve on the side of the inlet manifold also but that made no difference.
I know someone is going to suggest the ECU, I have excluded this for two reasons. 1. I just fixed it 2. The car was running perfect before doing the timing belt. The other suggestion might be the Fuel ECU, I have this bypassed and I can hear the pump screaming its head off. (Also just been replaced.)
My question is what would stop the car from idling? Timing belt out buy a notch or something?
Hope someone has experienced this problem and has a fix for it.
Thanks

Check your Idle control motor connections. Right in the front, top, middle.

Checked the Idle control motor connections. Still no joy. I was on the same wavelength as you thought it would be the answer.
Re timing did wonder about that but given the car was working fine before the timing belt went on I'm going to leave that alone for the moment.
Checked vacuum hoses also but again no joy.
