Is anyone over 400hp using the W58?
How long have you had it?
How many miles on it?
What is your driving style?
What's your secret to making it last?
My car will be between 400 and 500 hp when I get it back in a week or two. I am trying to get an idea of what I can get away with with it.
400-500hp (until i change tranny), Comp Turbo CT4X, 550cc RX7 injectors, SAFC, Tial x2, ARP, TT HG, FPR, Aeromotive FP, Competition Flywheel and an Action stage 6 clutch, W58.
I just purchased a spare W58 so I can experiment a bit.
(I know I posted something similar before, I wanted to see if I could get more info on it. Hope it's ok in the general forum)

Yea but it wont last long....I didnt even really abuse the tranny......only every did a few hard shifts from 1st to 2nd...
I was running 14psi on a single and here is what happened....2nd gear completely gone.....
It lasted about one full summer.....mine did have 170k on it though
I would if you are looking to make that much power.....consider something better than w58....

The only way the w58 may last is if you stay at stock 2jzgte power level....i.e around 325 hp...
The breaking point for the w58 is when you start getting over 350hp
I would keep it within those limits....you can always turn the boost up later....once you get a better suited transmission

Keep in mind that is 2nd gear......usually 3rd is the one that breaks
No grinding.....bout a 5500 rpm shift from 1st to 2nd.....i.e full boost...
When I had 245s tires in the rear it would just blow them off......now with the 275's it was to much grip for the w58 to handle....
Never got dynoed buy I have to be close to 400hp

Shrugy -- Other manual transmissions with full factory R&D and parts to support them are the R154 5-speed and V160 6-speed. The former is good for up to 500-750hp (fully built) and the latter is extremely high capacity, not to mention very expensive.
Others here have tried adapting other transmissions such as the Aisin AR5 and Nissan CD009.
Currently there is interest in adapting either ZF or Getrag BMW transmissions but that hasn't been worked out just yet in the USA.
Studiogeek -- For the power levels you want to start with and eventually work up to I think you should look into an R154. Even at 300hp (crank) you're beginning to push a W58 and it totally depends on how easily you drive the car, though sometimes it doesn't take anything but normal driving to blow one with a turbo. Health of the internals probably has a lot to do with why some people have great luck with theirs and sometimes others do not.
I think they do well enough against 1UZ's because even though there is more torque than from a 2JZGE it isn't that much more and being NA the linear powerband is kinder to the gears.

I am surely upgrading the tranny. I spent good money on the new clutch and flywheel for the W58. I figured if I had two W58's I could get my moneys worth out of the setup. As I work through them I'll be saving up for a brand new R154. A friend knows how to get them delivered from Japan for around $2400 (I'm also considering rebuilding a used R154 or a CD009).
I also figured I could gather some data points for others. This tranny was babied by a middle aged lady all its life and has only 68K miles on it.
I'm not sure what to focus my experiment on. The more fun choice would be to see how a low mileage, babied, W58 stands up to moderate abuse at 400hp, ;-)
The smarter choice would be to see how long I could get it too last.......... but what fun is that? haha

Consider your sworn duty to the CL community... Healthy W58s are in demand. If you had twins (kids, not turbos), you wouldn't let one go play in a busy street (for cars, not kids) just because you have a spare (kid, not tire).
mine is still in perfect shifting shape, no idea what power I am at somewhere between 320 and 400 depending on boost level. I literally never boost and go into the next gear without waiting a sec because thats what grenades them. I plan to remove it before I up the power so one of the v8 guys can use it or something, no sense in breaking a perfectly good trans if you plan to upgrade anyways, but I do see the appeal of breaking it to do the upgrade quicker =)

I would suggest you sell it if it has that low of mileage......should be able to get some good money for it in the condition it is
