Default Odd PS issue

Looking for input. I looked and cannot find any issues like this one.

Today, I went to start the 92 SC400. Started fine but there was a slight high pitched scream...(Different than the noises that occurred with my rack and pinion sega) Brand new noise. I didn't think much of it, it was cold outside. I saw the temp gauge creep up to the second tick in less than a minute...weird. I open the hood and the power steering pump is smoking like a freight train! Noise has tapered off for the most part but the pump is smoking like crazy. I turn off the car. The pump still smoked afterwards for 30 seconds or so.

Any ideas of what's going on here? After I replaced the rack, I was able to get all air out of the system and get the PS system working flawlessly. I checked the reservoir and there are no air bubbles at all.

Any ideas are appreciated as to what this could be...thanks!

Clogged filter or blocked hose, maybe? I would think the smoking pump is an indication it was being starved of fluid until the blockage cleared. Just a guess, though.

Could be...but the pump was not making noise like it did when it was for a fact starved of fluid. Fluid level is good.

So originally it was around 20 degrees this AM when I started it. I tried it again to see if it'd smoke again, and it didn't, now that it's 50 degrees outside. I guess it's just that my SC doesn't like the cold...? Thicker PS fluid due to the colder temps result in slow flow of the PS fluid maybe...? From what I've noticed, there hasn't been an old(er) SC that has liked the cold weather.
