Default ati pulley honing question

So I recently tried to install my ati dampener. I found that it went on really really tight to a point then would not go on all the way. After research I found that your are supposed to get it honed to the specs on the instructions by measuring the crank snout and the inside diameter of the hub. I don't have to tools to do that. I was wondering if I brought in my old pulley with the hub to the machine shop and just had them hone it to that specs, if that will work?

no it wouldn't work. how the pulley wears is different that the crank snout, and the pulley could be oblong or other defects (you are replacing a defective/worn out part I hope not just to do it cuz it sounds cool to do)

I would spend the money and get a decent pair of dial calipers so you can take the measurements and get it machined correctly

I've installed about 20 ati's from Boost Logic and never had this issue.

In a car that's gonna see abuse, doing an ati in place of the stock unit, whether failed or not, is always a good idea.

They are really a bit tighter to get in and out so having the right tools is the secret. But if you really can't get it in , you can use a caliper / cylinder honing tool (which is not expensive) on the ATI hub. You don't have to take out much during honing.

Some would heat up the ATI hub to get it in but it will be a pain to take that thing out . You might end up destroying it just to take it out. As with Vrank, I never had a problem installing and taking out mine with the right tools.

I have a friend who had someone install an titan(ati) dampener on his supra. The person who installed the unit didnt hone the dampener so for a whole year he was breaking serpentine belts, shredding the crap out of them. Ive read on supraforums that people do hone them and mentioned it to him. He decided to get his engine parts polished and install cams so he called me out to do the work. When it was time to remove the dampener it was a pita. I noticed when it was time to install the dampener that it was sitting a few mm forward compared to all the other pulleys. I told him to call titan to confirm the honing issue and titan told him that their customers usually hone the dampener.

For All ^^^^^^^^^^^^^ The ATI / Titan Damper it is not uncommon to sand roll it, In other words lightly sand out the paint material on the hub (inside) ever so lightly.
Also you will find that if you thoroughly clean the crank shaft, make sure the key is flat in the groove apply a lubricant to the crank shaft, the big washer on the crank bolt that touches the damper and the bottom side of the bolt head that touches the washer your install will be much easier to accomplish. (personally I use never cease on the crank shaft and a little bearing grease the washer and bolt head.)
