A/c compressor can still make noises with the a/c off.
If your noise is coming from the compressor it's more than likely the clutch.
If so they can lock up and throw a belt, but it'll get loud first.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Rebuilt-473-0147-A-C-Compressor-Clutch-/161174925468?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&fits=Model%3ASC300&hash=item2586c6309c&vxp=mtr
so the clutch still spins even though the pulley is the only thing spinning?

and if that part will work i can get it done ASAP. otherwise i may be on the hunt for a used compressor assembly

That would be my best guess.
Try turning you a/c on and off and see if the noise changes at all.
May want to pull the belt off and spin your pulleys to be sure.

I don't see sc300 compressor clutches.
I see some for the sc400 on a quick search.
So not sure that'll work
