Default Trans And Diff ID

I just need to confirm for myself if these are what they are. I have looked up W58 v. R154 pictures, it looks like i may have an R154 but the bellhousing is a W58 design. What I don't get is the black sandwich plate which I see on R154 pictures and the bulkiness of the trans. Previous owner told me R154, I think not unless somehow he got the R154 trans to use the W58 bellhousing.....

I was told the diff was not factory either... from the previous owner.

I was only able to get a quick pic...

Transmission looks like a W58. Where the black boot is on the side an R154 would have the slave cylinder.
Bellhousings can not be swapped between the two.
Diff may have been swapped for lower gears to match the manuals trans but to see if it has a LSD jack up the back end and spin one wheel. If the other wheel spins the opposite direction you have an open diff.

not sure you can test a diff like that by spinning one of the wheels in the air to tell if its a lsd or not.
I think you have to actually spin the driveshaft or input shaft (if its off the car) to see if they spin in opposite direction, or the same direction.

I still prefer the ol' do a massive burnout and count the lines. either that or take the cover off and see what you have.

Thanks for all the inputs!

I don't think the diff is anything other than factory myself that came with all 2JZ SC300s.

I haven't had the ***** to do a burnout. Last thing I need is to blow the engine, trans or even what I want to find out. Would a different diff have any distinguishable markings?

Tbh the burnout method isn't always conclusive, people have left 2 lines w/ an open diff. The jacking up car and wheel spinning method is usually the best.

The Lsd will act the same as an open diff if you jack it up and spin a tire. It's not fully locked like a posi so the opposite wheel will spin the other way. There are numbers on the backplate that can be used to identify the diff but often the diff is swapped into the stock pumpkin. You best bet is to drain the diff pop off the back plate and take a peek in there. New diff fluid is a good idea anyways
