Default Odd Auto Tranny Shifting Issue with '92 SC300

I'm posting on behalf of a friend that has a '92 SC300 with 180k on it. I've searched these boards with no luck on the topic.

His car is currently suffering a strange gear changing issue.

Park gear is fine.

When he shifts into reverse, it goes into neutral.

When he shifts into neutral, it goes into drive.

When he shifts into drive, it goes into drive.

All other drive gears work fine. There is no reverse as of right now.

Once the car is going, it drives fine and shifts fine.

Based on the symptoms, it seems like a shift linkage issue. But I can't find any diagrams or write-ups on the auto shifter assembly/setup.

Any thoughts? Tranny seems mechanically sound. This issue came out of nowhere with no signs of problems until it happened randomly.

Clean the transmission filter and change the fluid. THat's usually the issue with high mileage toyota transmissions. If the problem still persists then, replacement trannys can be had cheap.

Start by checking the shifter linkage. You will need to put the car up on jackstands and check the linkage along the transmission on the passenger.

Thanks for the advice.

Wasn't sure where the linkage was located; good to know its accessible.

Fluid change will come first. Hopefully that cures it!

I'd check your linkage first. It's free and sounds more likely.
