Default Fault codes.

Hello all. I tried searching but I couldn't find anything on how to check the fault codes. With my 92 sc400 I tried turning from acc to on 4 or 6 times with the car in neutral. The check engine light is on but nothing happens. Am I doing this right? Could anyone tell me how if not?
