93 SC400 valve tappit noise
Well that is what it sounds like. Has only happened a few times over this past year. After siting for at least a few days it will clatter loudly till the engine warms AND i rev it a few times. Then all is well. Seems like it has to shut down on a particulat lifter and that one collapses.
I am loath to simply "replace" a lifter as the cam to lifter signature would then be off and I might wipe a lobe. Any advice or similar experience?
I put a quart of Marvels Mystery Oil in it a fe days ago and I am hoping.
Thanks,
John

I did some homework. There are more than a few posts on this topic. I had to read a far piece to finally get the straight skinney.
Seems the SC400 does NOT have hydraulic lifters as I imagined. It uses shims to set the lash. The procedure will take the average guy a couple days. The guy that assembled this instruction http://www.lexls.com/tutorials/engine/valvecover.html will save those that are clever enuf to read it about half a day.
All the instructions call for the lash to be checked with a feelers gauge. I prefer a dial indicator and you might too. The digital caliper, Harbor Freight, costing $30 is also a must.
Contrary to popular theory, an engine making a lot of noise is hurting itself and should NOT be driven till it REALLY needs attention. DUH!!!
