W58 Whirring Noise - All gears but 4th
My W58 has had this whirring noise ever since I bought it. The transmission is fine, shifts every gear no issues... no grinding or anything.
But every gear but 4th makes a whirring noise. And when the tranny is in nuetral, it whirs but has a slight clacking noise. 4th is whisper quiet (since its a 1:1 it might mean something).
I was wondering if anyone knows if its a bearing or something so I can replace it.

I have the same prob. The reason why it does not do it in 4th gear, is because it's on the input shaft of the transmission, i believe. Which means it's probably countershaft wear. Let me know if fresh gear oil helps it out. Mine hasn't changed at all from a couple of flushes.

if you push in your clutch slightly does it go away? if it does then its the throw out or release bearing, i've been meaning to get my clutch changed and do the bearings at the same time but it hasn't started slipping yet so until then i'm just gonna deal with the noise for a bit.

Its not the Throwout bearing. I have actually had 2 brand new bearings.... and nothing.
Yes it goes away when i press down on the pedal... but the transmission stops of course.
The input shaft bearing is in an obvious location, where is the carrier bearing?

So I am thinking its one of the 2 highlighted ones. Unless you are thinking it might be one on the main shaft... but.... 4th doesnt touch the counter shaft, right?
BTW - there is another gear in the center of it, missed it when I posted last.

it's most likely the input shaft rear bearing. In a manual tranny the input shaft and output shafts turn at different speeds except when in 4th gear, which is direct drive. When the two shafts are turning at different speeds this bearing is in action so this is where the noise is coming from In direct drive both the input and output shaft turn at the same speed so this bearing turns at the same speed as well, making no noise. Time for either a new tranny or a rebuild on that on.
Part # for this is a needle bearing, 9036419006

Thanks for the explanation! I will replace that one when I pull it out.
