Default My SC 400 overheats when stopped

Hi everyone,

My 1992 SC400 overheats only when I am at lights. It goes all the way up to the red though. I have taken it to a few stations and some think it could be electrical, others think it could be radiator. The problem is they want to charge to diagnose.

I have a new radiator and thermostat so I think it could be something else.

Any suggestions so I dont pay a fortune for this problem?

Thanks!

Sounds like your water pump is going out.

In my experience, when a car overheats at a stop, usually it's fan related. When u had your radiator repleced did the put the fan shroud back? Does your fan work at a stop? If it isn't the fan it's probably the waterpump

check the fan - Another way to test it is to stop the car, turn on the AC and check if it still overheats - When the AC is on, the fan goes on automatically

Do it and let me know

My 95 has been doing the exact same thing if I let it sit idle for extended periods.

The fan is running too.

I drained all the coolant and it was significantly low. I had filled it back up from being low a month or so before this. I even went so far as to pull the upper rad hose off and fill the motor and the radiator, not just the overflow tank.

I haven't seen any leaks outside the car. It's a new radiator. and I pulled the carpet and noticed no visible heater core leaks or water stains.
